Kapolei captures OIA West hoops title

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 28, 2017

A year after finishing third in the OIA West and making an early exit in the league playoffs, Kapolei deserved a chance to celebrate a division title on Friday night. But the Hurricanes didn’t have much chance to exult in a 58-42 win at Leilehua in a matchup of the division’s undefeated teams. Kapolei coach Gary Ellison and athletic director Darren Camello instead focused on keeping the Hurricanes varsity and JV players together near the gym exit while security quelled […]

By Paul Honda on January 27, 2017

There were two Cinderellas at the ball on Thursday night. The one wearing a flowing velvet maroon gown, Farrington, turned out to be the princess of OIA Division I basketball following a 45-37 win over Kaimuki at Waipahu’s gym. The Lady Governors proved that, yes, working smart and hard every day does make a difference. A big one, enough to beat the same Kaimuki team it had lost to 50-35 just six weeks earlier. “Nothing went our way that day,” […]

OIA varsity dual wrestling championships a go

By Jerry Campany on January 26, 2017

The OIA varsity Dual Meet Championship is still a go for this weekend at Farrington despite a dearth of teams. There are only three boys teams committed, partly to allow athletes to rest of for the stretch run and partly because coaches are committed to the JV championships running at the same time at Radford. Seeding was completed Thursday night. The girls portion of the tournament looks to be competitive, with Officials champion Roosevelt leading the charge against Waianae (Fourth […]

At last, Maio and Warriors head to Big Dance

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2017

Just like that, ‘Iolani’s dream season ended before it could climax, and Kamehameha’s season is a dream come true. Kamehameha’s late-season surge is no surprise. For much of the early season, the Warriors played well enough to compete with front-runners Maryknoll and ‘Iolani. But something was missing. That something showed up under the brightest spotlight on Wednesday night with a state-tournament berth essentially on the line. Mikiala Maio, the senior who had never been to the state tourney other than […]
