Mauga, Montiban receive offers from Cal

By Billy Hull on February 25, 2017

California is the latest Pac-12 school to get in on the local recruiting scene. The Golden Bears extended an offer Friday to Waianae defensive end Kana’i Mauga, who now holds offers from three different Pac-12 schools. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound junior is the first Class of 2018 recruit from Hawaii to receive an offer from the Golden Bears. Cal also extended an offer to Kamehameha-Hawaii alum and current Riverside City College offensive lineman Keli’i Montiban. Montibon, who is 6-foot-3 and 290 […]

Girls P4P: Alo completes perfect season

By Jerry Campany on February 24, 2017

The name atop Hawaii Prep World’s end of season girls pound-for-pound rankings is the same as it ever was. Kahuku’s Teniya Alo follows her sister, Teshya, as the state’s best after an unbeaten season capped off by her second state title with a dominating performance including pins in her four matches. Teniya started the season outside of the top spot but took her rightful place after moving up to 145 to beat Radford’s Angela Peralta. The closest wrestler to Peralta’s […]

Kailua lefty Cantillo off to a good start

By Nick Abramo on February 23, 2017

Kailua left-hander Joey Cantillo is off to a good start in the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season. Cantillo pitched five innings, gave up two hits and struck out seven in a 2-1 victory over Kaiser in the OIA East opener on Wednesday. There were at least a handful of major league scouts there to watch him. The scouts have also come to watch him at practice. The 6-foot-4 Cantillo, who has more than 10 college scholarship offers, too, downplays all […]

Kaaihue gets Kaiser baseball rolling

By Nick Abramo on February 23, 2017

Not everyone can have a former major leaguer as a coach, so the Kaiser Cougars are pretty lucky to have Kila Kaaihue as the head man. Kaaihue started his first OIA baseball regular season in charge as a head coach on Wednesday, where the maxim, “You can’t win ’em all,” came into play. Kaiser lost to OIA East rival Kailua 2-1, but served notice that it is probably never going to go down without a fight this year. After falling […]

Boys P4P: Cabanban ends season on top

By Jerry Campany on February 23, 2017

Corey Cabanban of Saint Louis ends the wrestling season atop the pound-for-pound rankings after sweeping through states on his way to his third title. He will undoubtedly begin his quest for No. 4 atop the rankings next year. Cabanban had his share of opposition during his run, beating Mililani’s Casey Nitta 2-0 before being pushed a little bit by Moanalua’s Logan Garcia in the final. He wasn’t alone, each of the top wrestlers endured a few nervous moments during the […]

Hawaii ramps up its recruiting effort

By Billy Hull on February 22, 2017

Exactly three weeks ago, the University of Hawaii announced the signing of 23 players to its 2017 recruiting class. Not a single one was home grown. Fourteen of the 19 local players to sign with a Division I school were offered by the Rainbow Warriors, but with Kahuku’s Kesi Ah-Hoy switching to Oregon State over the final few weeks of the recruiting process, it left Hawaii without a single local signee. It sure seems like head coach Nick Rolovich and […]

Four boys earn fourth state wrestling medals

By Jerry Campany on February 21, 2017

Four boys this year — Kapolei’s Jayson Pagurayan, ‘Iolani’s Colby Watase and KJ Pascua, and Antonio Ruiz of Moanalua — swept through the first day of the Chevron/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships to guarantee themselves their fourth state medal. They were certainly thinking of championships at that time, but to reach the podium four straight years is an accomplishment in itself. Pascua was the only senior in the group to earn the elusive state title. The other three earned some select […]
