Hawaii in Top 10 in sports safety policies

A study conducted by the Korey Stringer Institute puts Hawaii in the top 10 in the nation in safety. The study grades states on ability to protect athletes from from potentially life-threatening conditions, including heat stroke. North Carolina, Kentucky and Massachusetts top the list with Iowa, California and Colorado bringing up the rear. Defensive tackle Jeremiah Taleni, a 2013 Kailua High graduate who was in on two sacks of Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson in Pittsburgh’s upset win over the Tigers last season, was kicked off the team in April for disciplinary reasons. Taleni, who is 6-foot-2 and 290 pounds, had three sacks in seven games last year, including 1.5 sacks in the win over the Tigers, who went on to beat Alabama for the national title. Kahuku’s Vimahi lands first SEC offer

Kahuku junior offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi landed his first scholarship offer from the SEC on Thursday. Ole Miss became the 10th school overall to offer the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Vimahi, who opens his season Friday night at home against Leilehua. The top three teams in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 are also in the MaxPreps national Top 150 after the latest rankings were released Monday. Kaiser forfeits game against Mililani

Kaiser’s varsity football team will not play a scheduled game for the second week in a row, according to a source close to the situation. The Cougars’ varsity and junior varsity games at Mililani on Friday night have been canceled. The results will go in the books as forfeits by Kaiser, which has been having difficulties fielding enough varsity players to safely play an Oahu Interscholastic Association game.
