‘Iolani is a unanimous girls volleyball No. 1

By Nick Abramo on August 28, 2017

‘Iolani’s early season girls volleyball resume is impressive. The Raiders won their annual Ann Kang Invitational earlier this month and have some good wins over big-name mainland teams. They have also beaten arch rival Kamehameha in the team’s only matchup so far, and that’s a big reason why they’re a unanimous No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10. The Raiders are the defending Division I state champions. They have wins so far against four California teams (Palos Verdes, San […]

Kahuku jumps to No. 23 in nation

By Billy Hull on August 28, 2017

Despite allowing its first touchdown of the season in a 40-6 win over Moanalua on Friday, the Kahuku Red Raiders jumped two spots to No. 23 in the MaxPreps Xcellent25 national high school football rankings released Monday. Kahuku (3-0) has outscored its first three opponents 101-6 this season, yet is ranked No. 2 in the state, behind Saint Louis, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The Red Raiders play at Aiea this weekend before heading to the mainland for the Polynesian […]

Kailua’s extra ingredient

By Brian McInnis on August 27, 2017

No. 8 Kailua did a lot of things right in a 40-14 dismantling of Nanakuli on Saturday night at Alex Kane Stadium. There was firm response to a big first-quarter play by the Golden Hawks, a 90-yard connection from Nahum Kipi to Reno Curtis after Curtis had snuck behind the secondary. There was a strong ground game — four players rumbled for 50 or more yards — and timely passing by quarterback Aaron Mejia. Running back Chauncy Gonsalves-Bell led the […]

VIDEO: Farrington gets big win over No. 5 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2017

The young Farrington Governors made their first-ever win at Skippa Diaz Stadium a big one, a 28-7 upset of No. 5 Kapolei on Saturday night. Chasen Castilliano was part of a Govs defense that came up with big plays all game long. The senior defensive back had three interceptions, including a pick-6.

Farrington’s essential ingredient: preparation

By Nick Abramo on August 27, 2017

Farrington wasn’t about to get kicked around again, especially at home. Despite a slow start this season, the unranked Governors showed just how much pride they’ve got by knocking off No. 5 Kapolei in dominant fashion, 28-7, Saturday night at Skippa Diaz Stadium. The previously super-hot Hurricanes took a double whammy this week, first finding out their 41-7 win over Castle last week had turned into a forfeit loss due to an ineligible player and then getting outplayed all night […]

‘Iolani’s Mizutani joins 500-yard club

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 26, 2017

Asked about setting ‘Iolani’s single-game passing record, Tai-John Mizutani responded with a question of his own. “I hit a record?” Mizutani hadn’t yet had a chance to review the numbers after ‘Iolani’s 57-34 win over Kaimuki in the Father Bray Classic on Saturday. But when he went to the bench early in the fourth quarter, he’d thrown for a school-record 503 yards, breaking the previous mark of 485 he set as a sophomore in 2015. Mizutani became the sixth Oahu […]

Tina-Sobarano has Kalani in good hands

By Christian Shimabuku on August 26, 2017

Based on his ’88’ jersey number and speed, Kalani senior Seth Tina-Sobarano might look like a converted wide receiver playing quarterback. But make no mistake, he’s exclusively a quarterback. And he proved it with his arm in the Falcons’ 57-24 win over McKinley on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The third-year Falcons starter was 14-for-20 for 302 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Many of his deep balls were delivered with just the right combination of power and touch. […]

Buchanan shows improvement in 2nd start

By Christian Shimabuku on August 26, 2017

After making history last week, McKinley sophomore quarterback Alexandria Buchanan had quite the lead-up to Saturday’s matchup with Kalani. “It’s pretty crazy. There’s a lot of support coming in from friends and family of course, but also complete strangers, people I don’t even know,” she said. “It’s amazing getting this support from my team. It means a lot to me and I’m pretty sure it means a lot to my team, too.” Buchanan set out to prove that the Kalaheo […]
