Here’s a look at how I voted in this week’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. Please mind that all prep polls have the nutritional value of whipped cream. Small doses are fine. HAWAII GROWN: UNLV’s Oda turns pro

By Billy Hull on August 29, 2017

UNLV senior and 2014 Moanalua graduate John Oda told Golfweek that he will skip his senior season of eligibility with the Rebels and turn pro. In a story posted on the Golfweek website, Oda said he made up his mind when he qualified for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in June. He shot 78 and 76 to finish 10 over after two rounds and missed the cut by eight shots, but finished ahead of eight other golfers. Oda was […]

Silva steps down from Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2017

For 11 years, Allan Silva‘s message of positivity was a given for the Farrington boys basketball program. For the past two seasons, the former Chaminade hoopster was back at his stomping grounds, McCabe Gym. The Saint Louis Crusaders looked to Silva for an edge in the ruthlessly difficult Interscholastic League of Honolulu. After two seasons at Saint Louis, Silva has stepped down. “I decided to resign last Friday to pursue other opportunities,” Silva said. “There’s some other things I’m doing […]

Connecticut’s Taft School bonded with Govs

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2017

A private college preparatory school football team from Connecticut had the trip of a lifetime last week in Hawaii. The only downside is that Taft School of Watertown, Conn., didn’t get to play a real game. Instead, they held five practices, including one at Farrington alongside the Governors. Football teams from the New England area don’t start as early as teams from Hawaii, so the practices in Hawaii were the Big Red’s first official workouts of the season. Taft originally […]

Q&A: Kailua’s big OL Sione Veikoso

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2017

In his young life, Sione Veikoso has learned and grown, figuratively and literally. The Kailua senior has overcome a great loss in his life off the field, and reached mountain peaks individually on the field and in the classroom. Here is the full feature on Veikoso in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Here are some slices that didn’t make it into the feature story: > Christian Mejia, another three-sport standout, was one of the team’s leaders when Veikoso was learning the ropes. […]

Trojans jump to No. 3; Govs back at No. 7

By Billy Hull on August 28, 2017

After posting its second consecutive shutout on the field, the Mililani Trojans made enough of a case in a 49-0 win over Castle on Saturday to jump Punahou for the third spot in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. The Trojans, who also own a forfeit win over Kaiser, have yet to give up a point this season as they hit the road to play Clayton Valley Charter (Calif.) on Friday. Mililani finished one vote ahead of […]
