By Paul Honda on September 5, 2017

He works constantly in the classroom, the weight room and the gridiron, but Samson Reed saves the intensity for battle. In the classroom, Reed has a 3.6 grade-point average. On the field, he is a defensive lineman who is a big key to Kahuku’s 4-0 start and top-25 national ranking. Here is the Q&A by Reed, who was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Kapolei makes a move in volleyball Top 10

By Nick Abramo on September 4, 2017

Kapolei’s dominant win over Mililani on Thursday impressed voters enough to push the Hurricanes up three spots to No. 5 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser girls volleyball Top 10 released Monday. It was the league season opener, but the Hurricanes appeared to be in midseason form in getting the rare win over the Oahu Interscholastic Association powerhouse Trojans. Nos. 1 through 4 — ‘Iolani, Kamehameha, Punahou and Kahuku — remained the same as last week’s first poll of the season. Hawaii […]

Leilehua no longer ordinary in OIA Red

By Christian Shimabuku on September 3, 2017

Leilehua coach Mark Kurisu is a believer in the bigger picture, those small decisions and actions that have a cumulative impact on his program. It’s why he holds his players to higher standards in the classroom, for example. He believes that it will help his players respond to adversity on the field. He was seen saying “trust the process” to players, coaches and parents after the Mules’ 20-19 comeback victory over No. 8 Kapolei in overtime on Saturday night, and […]

Waianae’s Rosario stands alone at the top

By Billy Hull on September 3, 2017

Rico Rosario stands alone at the top of Waianae’s long list of powerful running backs through the years. The 5-foot-8 senior broke West Keliikipi‘s single-game rushing record that stood for 20 years with a 243-yard performance in a 43-20 win over Moanalua on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Rosario, who nearly left for Liberty High in Nevada in the offseason, opted to stay on the West side for his senior year of high school. It has been a tough […]

11 years and 17 losses later, Damien topples ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2017

Legacy is a loaded word, to be sure. For Marcus Faufata-Pedrina, the poise that makes him a leader on and off the football field shouldn’t be mistaken for indifference or passivity. On the contrary, he’s been at the controls as a field general for Damien’s back-to-back ILH football titles in Division II. And as of Saturday, he was at the wheel as the Monarchs ended a 17-game losing streak to ‘Iolani. Damien’s 35-21 win at Skippa Diaz Stadium left the […]

Buffanblu prove their worth in California

By Billy Hull on September 2, 2017

It wasn’t meant as an excuse by either Punahou coach Kale Ane or senior receiver Andrei Iosivas. Neither believed it was a coincidence that in their first back-to-back game of the season, the fourth-ranked Buffanblu put forth their best outing of the season in a 56-42 win over Junipero Serra on Saturday at Manchester Stadium in San Diego. Punahou (3-0), which began the season with a lackluster win over Moanalua and then held off Torrey Pines 23-7 three weeks later, […]
