HAWAII GROWN: D-I soccer players from Hawaii

By Billy Hull on September 12, 2017

Wednesday’s Hawaii Grown section in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser will profile Washington senior midfielder Shaye Villanueva, a 2014 ‘Iolani graduate, who didn’t have a college scholarship offer when she finished her senior season with the Raiders. Despite that, the All-ILH first-team midfielder in 2014 has gone on to start 35 matches and play close to 60 games in four years with the Huskies, who are 6-2 this year and beat then-No. 2 Florida, 1-0, at the beginning of the month. Villanueva […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani All-State OH Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2017

Poet, student, athlete and eldest daugther, Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres loves volleyball and maybe she loves hiking with her parents and two younger brothers even more. With a key ILH doubleheader coming up this afternoon at ‘Iolani’s Father Bray Athletic Center — Maryknoll vs. Kamehameha, 5 p.m., and Punahou vs. ‘Iolani, 7 p.m. — she chatted with Hawaii Prep World about being the sole senior on her team, and published poetry. She was featured in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Saige Ka‘aha‘aina-Torres ‘Iolani girls […]

Kamehameha girls vault to No. 1

By Nick Abramo on September 11, 2017

After beating ‘Iolani in three sets last week to take over sole possession of first place in the ILH, Kamehameha leaped over the Raiders into the No. 1 spot in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 released today. The Warriors have ripped off three straight wins to move to 4-1 in league play since losing in three sets in their first meeting with ‘Iolani. The Raiders dropped to No. 2 after losing twice in league play. Punahou, which […]

Waianae to No. 7; Campbell enters Top 10

By Hawaii Prep World on September 11, 2017

The quest to be No. 1 is a no brainer right now. Saint Louis again remains the unanimous No. 1 in the state. After that, however, there are a wide range of opinions from two to 10 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released today. Kahuku, which was shut out 17-0 by Bingham (Utah) in the Polynesian Football Classic on Saturday without quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava (shoulder), remained the No. 2 team in the state. However, the gap between […]

Kapolei gets back on solid football ground

By Nick Abramo on September 10, 2017

That sinking feeling is over for Kapolei. The Hurricanes (3-3, 2-3 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red) broke a three-game losing streak by routing No. 8 Kailua 33-0 at Alex Kane Stadium on Saturday night. They did it by securing eight turnovers, a performance that may put them back into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10. Simply put, had it been a fourth loss in a row — to a ranked team — the hole may have been one that they may not […]

No. 3 Buffanblu prevail in pick-fest

By Brian McInnis on September 10, 2017

If we’re being charitable, there was a grand total of 29 completed passes in Saturday night’s ILH battle between No. 3 Punahou and No. 5 Kamehameha. But if we’re being truthful, seven of those 29 were brought down by guys with a different postgame load of laundry than the player who tossed the football. Seven interceptions — six in the first half — set the stage for an unpredictable battle between the old rivals. In the end it was the Buffanblu who […]

Mauga making his case as best in state

By Christian Shimabuku on September 10, 2017

If big-time players make big-time plays, then Kana’i Mauga is as prime as it gets. It seems that the Waianae senior is making his bid for defensive player of the year honors each time he takes the field this season. He added to his hot streak on Saturday night against Radford, taking an interception 71 yards to the house. It was the Seariders’ first touchdown of the game and it set the tone for a 47-15 rout. “All the credit […]

Target practice: Campbell’s Kaipo keeps working

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2017

In the space of two nights, it seemed left-handers were all about the place. Friday afternoon, Joel Lane, ‘Iolani’s longtime quarterbacks coach and guru, was in the midst as the Raiders fell to St. Francis. The Raiders did all they could offensively, put up a respectable 21 points one of the better defensive units in the state — regardless of classification. Friday night, Mililani QB Dillon Gabriel weaved his magic wand and puppeteered the offense. Farmington’s aggressive defense would go […]
