HAWAII GROWN: Robins-Hardy rescues BYU

By Billy Hull on September 15, 2017

After watching her 14th-ranked BYU women’s volleyball team get steamrolled in the first set by rival No. 16 Utah on Thursday night, Cougars coach Heather Olmstead turned to Kamehameha alumna Alohi Robins-Hardy to turn the tide. The BYU senior did exactly what her coach hoped, rallying the Cougars to a thrilling 16-25, 25-13, 25-17, 20-25, 18-16 win over the Utes in Salt Lake City. Robins-Hardy, who has played in exactly half (19) of the team’s 38 sets this season, posted […]

Barber will be the key for Punahou to beat Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on September 15, 2017

He’s not the only first-year, senior starter to rise in prominence. Punahou’s Stephen Barber is merely the latest. When the Buffanblu (4-0, 1-0 ILH) meet Saint Louis (3-0, 1-0) on Saturday night (6 p.m.) at Aloha Stadium, it has the makings of an ultimate battle in the decades-old lore of this rivalry. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, he is the prototype of what the position requires in the modern game. Trained to release the ball quickly, yet be durable and […]

Q&A: Kale Ane on No. 1 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2017

The numbers have evened out in recent years for Punahou in their battles with Saint Louis. For the past three seasons, Kale Ane’s Buffanblu have beaten the Crusaders at least once, a feat that is matched only by former Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza in the last 21 years. Ane’s team is focused on the showdown with Saint Louis this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Punahou (4-0, 1-0 ILH) can grab the lead with a win over the defending state and league […]

Q&A: Cal Lee on facing No. 4 Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2017

Saint Louis vs. Punahou is as wild, entertaining and gritty a matchup as any. Last year, Saint Louis won the first matchup 64-44 before Punahou took the rematch 33-20 before the Crusaders rebounded for a 28-14 win for the ILH football title en route to a state championship. Saint Louis (3-0, 1-0 ILH D-I) meets Punahou (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium with first place in the league at stake. Crusaders coach Cal Lee chatted about the game […]

Lunas-Warriors: Lahainaluna’s near pefection

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2017

When Kamehameha opened its Maui campus, the varsity football program had all kinds of possibilities. One big obstacle: the tradition and success of Lahainaluna. In the 13 seasons since KS-Maui began varsity play, Lahainaluna has dominated the series 25-1. The Warriors’ lone victory came early in the 2015 season. The two teams will meet Friday at the Warriors’ home field in Pukalani, where KS-Maui (3-2, 2-1 MIL) has never beaten the reigning Division II state champion Lunas (4-1, 3-0). 2016 […]

War of Warriors: KS-Hawaii’s dominance

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2017

The opening of Kamehameha’s Big Island campus in 2004 stirred up a hornet’s nest of sorts over the years. In multiple sports, coaches at other BIIF schools, particularly the smaller programs, bemoaned the loss of talented athletes to the presence of Kamehameha-Hawaii. It couldn’t be stopped, of course. The campus is nothing short of beautiful, more akin to a pristine small college than a typical high school. Waiakea was never a small-enrollment school, but the effects of KS-Hawaii’s allure is […]

Saint Louis WR added to Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on September 14, 2017

Saint Louis senior Jonah Panoke, who has committed to the University of Hawaii, has been invited to participate in the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. Panoke, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound wide receiver, leads the Saints with 10 receptions and 160 receiving yards and has also scored a touchdown this year in three games. Saint Louis (3-0) is the unanimous No. 1 team in the state heading into Saturday’s game against Punahou for the ILH Division I lead. Panoke, who also caught a 52-yard […]

Ane looking to trip Lee for 4th straight year

By Jerry Campany on September 13, 2017

If you had to choose one coach to possibly outwit Saint Louis legend Cal Lee, Punahou’s Kale Ane would be near the top of the list. The legends will face off for the 15th time on Saturday at Aloha Stadium, and Ane can pull up behind former Damien and Pac-Five coach Don Botelho with his fifth win over Lee. Botelho went 6-35 against Lee in his career, while Ane is 4-10. Ane can become the first coach to beat Lee […]
