The 6-foot-2 outside hitter blasted 21 kills as Aiea outlasted Kalani 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 on a muggy Wednesday night at Farrington’s Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse. Aiea advanced to the quarterfinal round of the OIA Division I playoffs. Mamai-Lagafuaina added an ace and a block for Na Alii (8-3), who will play East Division top seed Moanalua on Thursday night. ILH D-II race appears to be wide open

By Billy Hull on October 11, 2017

The final two weeks of the ILH Division II regular season have shown it’s a three-team race for the league crown this year. Damien, which finished a league-best 5-1 in the first round, won one of the best games of 2017 against St. Francis, rallying from 13 points down in the third quarter to pull out a 27-20 victory after being held to 14 total yards in the first half. The Monarchs have had the upper hand ever since that […]

Pupule ballot: Voters drop Monarchs

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2017

I tried, Damien. I really tried. There is an certain echelon, the upper crust of high school football in the 50th state. Their history, their tradition, their pedigree — all real. Their resume, each of them, real-deal Holyfield results. That’s 95 percent “strength of schedule” thanks to their ingrained league schedule. Then there’s Division II. Technically, a stratosphere that is part collection of smaller schools (ILH), part programs that are wedged into the lower stratosphere by league power-rating formula/format/rebellious anti-National […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani record-setting QB Tai-John Mizutani

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2017

Within the hallowed halls of ‘Iolani School’s campus, the laughter of children and weight of backpacks filled with delightful textbooks are equally prominent. Countless state-championship trophies line the inner sanctum, encased in glass. Where once there was a sun-drenched walkway, now a covered, shady and welcoming area for students to relax. Dillingham Pool is constantly busy. So are both gyms. Long gone are the tennis courts and metal bleachers of the football field, replaced by Kozuki stadium and the adjacent, […]

By Billy Hull on October 9, 2017

A season that started out with so much promise quickly became a nightmare out at Kapolei. The Hurricanes were a comfortable 3-0 when they self reported the use of an ineligible player against Castle, resulting in a forfeit. A 21-point loss to Farrington and an overtime defeat against Leilehua followed, leaving Kapolei suddenly fighting just to make the playoffs. It wasn’t until a 36-0 shutout of Nanakuli on the final weekend of the regular season that Kapolei clinched a playoff […]

MaxPreps.com ranks all of the high school football teams nationally in what it calls its Freeman computer rankings. The computer rankings are separate from the website’s Xcellent 25, a poll voted on by humans in which the top-ranked team in Hawaii, Saint Louis, is No. 25. The Crusaders, however, are No. 15 in the Freeman computer rankings. Also, in a completely separate poll, Saint Louis is No. 14 in the USA Today Super 25 computer rankings and are not ranked […]
