Failauga carries Waipahu to OIA D-II title game

By Kyle Sakamoto on October 14, 2017

Waipahu’s Alfred Failauga turned in a super-human performance Friday against Roosevelt. When it was all over, Failauga reminded his coach that he is, after all, human. Failauga rushed 40 times for a season-high 239 yards and two touchdowns, and surpassed 1,000 yards for the season, as host Waipahu beat Roosevelt 38-0 in an OIA Division II semifinal game. “He actually told me after the game, ‘Coach, remember I’m human’ because he was just gassed,” said Waipahu coach Bryson Carvalho. “That’s […]

Kahuku’s offensive evolution: More diversity

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2017

The Kapolei Hurricanes were on the verge of a breakthrough after a season of extreme ups and downs. No. 2 Kahuku wasn’t willing to budge. The Red Raiders are in a metamorphosis, a power-running team for decades on end that can turn to sophomore quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava for the quick third-down conversion by air. That happened again and again as the patient Red Raiders patiently imposed their will with sheer force and precise finesse en route to a 35-7 victory […]

Kamehameha notches breakthrough win

By Billy Hull on October 14, 2017

It was a fitting end to Kamehameha’s first win over Punahou in its last 11 tries. Warriors running back Kanoa Shannon, the workhorse of the Kamehameha offense all season, scored his first rushing touchdown against an ILH opponent on carry No. 162 this season, scoring from 7 yards out with 2:10 remaining to ice Kamehameha’s 44-31 victory over Punahou on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Shannon, who finished with 86 yards on 28 carries, is averaging 24 carries a game […]

Moanalua ready to build on 2017 season

By Brian McInnis on October 14, 2017

Moanalua knew it needed to play a perfect game to hang with No. 3 Mililani in the OIA Division I quarterfinals on Friday night. Na Menehune sure tried, but they were not perfect, falling 49-14 at John Kauinana Stadium. So ended a turnaround season, one that seemed lost in early September but was salvaged in very respectable fashion. Moanalua (4-6) began 0-5, staged a three-game rally to make the playoffs, then upset Kailua 17-14 in the first round last week […]

Defense powers Pearl City to title game

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 14, 2017

A bye to close the regular-season schedule gave Pearl City two weeks to prepare for Friday’s playoff matchup with Kaimuki. After pulling out a 7-0 defensive duel, the Chargers have another 12 days to devise a game plan before facing an explosive Waipahu attack with the OIA Division II championship at stake. The Chargers allowed 193 yards in Friday’s semifinal duel with Kaimuki, but protected the last 7 to secure its fifth shutout of the season and continue its pursuit […]

Castilliano was Govs’ catalyst in failed comeback

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2017

It was not a good season by Farrington standards, but the Govs made a game of it in the Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals Friday night and nearly came back to knock off No. 7 Waianae. Trailing 27-7 with less than six minutes left, Farrington got to within 27-21 when the final whistle blew. It was Chasen Castilliano who got it going. The senior has been a big defensive playmaker for the Govs (5-5) the past two seasons, and it appears […]

Klaneski wants to end title chase next week

By Christian Shimabuku on October 13, 2017

Damien coach Eddie Klaneski hopes history will repeat itself when the Monarchs and St. Francis meet again for the ILH Division II championship at Aloha Stadium. Next Saturday’s matchup will mark exactly one year since Damien beat St. Francis 20-12 in Halawa to win the 2016 ILH Division II title. Like last year, both teams split the season series. The main difference this time around is that the Saints will have to beat the top-seeded Damien twice to claim the […]
