Pupule ballot*: Maryknoll girls the team to beat

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2017

Girls basketball preseason tipped off a couple of weeks ago, and though we’re not doing a girls basketball Top 10 just yet, this pupule brain is wrapping itself around what it saw at the McKinley Black and Gold Classic and a nonconference game between Kamehameha and Kaimuki. That was enough to stoke the fire a bit. This is not a ballot, but the beginning of one. Pupule BKG ballot 11/17/17 (Updated with more recent results) Teams listed in no particular […]

New field, bleachers for Kalaheo

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2017

More than a few passers-by have done a double-take along Mokapu Boulevard in recent months. That huge, silverish stack of metal is what has been missing for Kalaheo’s football and soccer teams all these years. Bleachers. A high, beautiful stack of seats in the year 2017. The work isn’t limited to spectator appeal, though. “The sprinkler system is in and when the roots come up, we start the process to new grass,” Kalaheo Athletic Director Mark Brilhante said. The length […]

Kahuku welcomes major hoops talent in Smith

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2017

The Kahuku basketball team will be defending its Division I state championship this year, and the arrival of Galen Tolu Smith, a transfer from Mississippi, might make it just a bit easier. The 6-foot-10 senior center/forward who enrolled at the school in the fall recently signed a letter of intent to play for Western Kentucky. The person who knows him best, his father Galen Smith, concisely gave us his take on what Hawaii basketball fans can expect to see on […]

Tigers trying to run while staying disciplined

By Paul Honda on November 21, 2017

The eye test before tip-off was incomplete. The McKinley Tigers, a group of fine, young gentlemen, don’t have a lot of height, girth or swagger. But after the tip, it was all business for coach Duane Omori’s team. Even this early, scarcely one week into preseason play, the Tigers are moving the ball, spacing the court, battling on the boards against bigger teams. McKinley took it on the chin in a wipeout loss to defending D-II state champion St. Francis […]

Coaches, fans on start times, overtimes at states

By Paul Honda on November 21, 2017

The First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships had a different look this year. It looked quite well, even though it didn’t seem like that was possible. With the Oahu Interscholastic Association reducing its entry number from 10 teams in 2016 to just four, there was a question about how the tourney would stand. It was a success. For more, read today’s feature in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. >> Unprecedented First, the Division II state final turned into a record-setting seven-overtime thriller. […]

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2017

Crusaders end season where it started at No. 1

By Billy Hull on November 20, 2017

For the first time since Kahuku in 2012, the No. 1 team in the state never changed throughout the entire football season. Open Division state champion Saint Louis (10-0), which completed its first undefeated season since 1996 with a 31-28 victory over Kahuku on Saturday night (Sunday morning) at Aloha Stadium, held its No. 1 ranking in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 all year. The Crusaders have been No. 1 for 18 consecutive weeks dating back to last year’s […]
