Wily thinking long term for young Kahuku

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2017

There was a time, not so long ago, when LaToya Wily and Chico Furtado were not coaching counterparts. In fact, Wily was one of the top hoopsters in the state, and she departed from Kahuku to play at Furtado’s girls basketball juggernaut at Kalaheo for a season. Furtado, now coach at Maryknoll, remembers it clearly. “That was some crazy times. She played for me one summer with Hawaii Select. Then she came over after her freshman year. Leaving a community […]

Freedom’s defense a gem in Open win over Liberty

By Paul Honda on November 25, 2017

Defense, defense, defense. Team Freedom’s 25-7 win over Team Liberty in the Open Division battle of the JPS Classic turned out to be a showcase of elite defense. It ended much as it began, with Tasi Malepeai (Mililani) and Kukea Emmsley (Kapolei) corralling Liberty quarterback Tai-John Mizutani for a sack during a last-ditch drive. On the next play, Kapolei lineman Aaron Faumui sealed it with a sack of his own. In all, Mizutani did magical work to not get sacked […]

Tina-Soberano sparks Liberty over Freedom 26-23

By Paul Honda on November 25, 2017

During the most crucial part of the regular season, Seth Tina-Soberano saw his dream of Kalani reaching the OIA Division II playoffs took a hit. During Kalani’s trip to the mainland, the senior quarterback suffered an injury in their game and sat out the next contest. Kalani lost that game, and the Falcons’ playoff chances in a tough D-II race diminished. He probably could’ve sat the remainder of the season, but returned for the latter part of the season. The […]

Coperning, Camacho lift Tigers over Jr. Bows

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

Down their most experienced player, the McKinley Tigers left nothing to chance. Caleb Coperning tied the game at 61 with a tough drive, and sophomore Frank Camacho‘s pull-up J in the lane gave the Tigers the lead for good with less than a minute left in a 63-61 win over University on Friday night in the Hawaii Self Storage McKinley Black and Gold Classic. With senior guard Kyle Moraga sidelined on Friday nights for personal reasons, the Tigers had to […]

Patient Hurricanes in evaluation mode

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

Gary Ellison has looked forward to this day for some time. Now, Ellison and his staff have some real data to work with. In their first nonconference game of the boys basketball season, the Kapolei Hurricanes got plenty of work done, right through the entire roster. Zoar Nedd scored 11 points in a 58-33 victory over OIA Division II contender Kalani on Saturday afternoon at the Hawaii Self Storage McKinley Black and Gold Classic. “The hustle was there, but we’ve […]

Reserve power fuels Maryknoll win over Mililani

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

For decades, both as a player and a coach, Kelly Grant valued the perimeter shot. Whether it was emphasized by his high school and college coach, Tony Sellitto, or by himself later as a coach, Grant’s teams at Kaimuki, then at Maryknoll, have often been very good from the 3-point arc. On Saturday, the Spartans pounded the ball into the post, looking very little like last year’s perimeter-oriented team. Then came backup guard Makoto Kamata, who sank two treys during […]

UH commits show championship chops

By Christian Shimabuku on November 22, 2017

Fans of the Hawaii football team may very well have seen a glimpse of the future late Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis’ 31-28 victory over Kahuku in the HHSAA Division I Open championship game featured three UH commits. Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, receiver Jonah Panoke and defensive back Kai Kaneshiro are all Crusaders who have verbally pledged to join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2018 season.
