2004 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 7, 2018

Thirty years after Kamehameha won its only Prep Bowl, the Warriors claimed their first state championship in 2004 behind running back Jayson Rego. Rego, who was the offensive player of the year in both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers, rushed for 212 yards on a staggering 39 carries in the state final to lead the Warriors over Leilehua and quarterback Bryant Moniz. The Mules were a longshot to make the finals, but Nolan Tokuda locked up the coach […]

Trojans clinch OIA West, Sabers still confident

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2018

After all this time, I finally got to see the team that beat Lahainaluna. When the week began, the Campbell Sabers were 7-0 in the OIA West, a team ranked No. 8 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. Built on solid leadership from top to bottom, with a fourth-year court general in Gieani Balino. Tonight, the Sabers were coming off a 37-34 loss to Leilehua, facing the unbeaten Mililani Trojans with first place at stake. A Campbell win would […]

Clarissa Chun is a wellspring of inspiration

By Nick Abramo on January 6, 2018

Clarissa Chun was a U.S. Olympian … been there done that, twice. More than that, she is an example … perhaps the best possible example … for Hawaii’s girls wrestlers to follow, whether or not they want to compete for fun or go as far as possible in the sport. Chun, a 1999 Roosevelt graduate and two-time state champion, was at Punahou’s Hemmeter Fieldhouse for last week’s Pa’ani Challenge to run a Wednesday clinic and to help give out awards […]

1986 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 6, 2018

The 1986 prep football all-star teams had the same top players in each newspaper. Saint Louis defensive lineman Manly Williams won the defensive and lineman of the year honors while Kahuku tailback Richard Stevenson won offensive and back of the year honors. The Honolulu Advertiser went with Pac-Five quarterback David Searle on its first team while the Star-Bulletin chose Kahuku’s Walter Santiago as its quarterback. Leilehua’s Adrian Murrell, as a sophomore, made the Advertiser’s first team. Notable players to make […]

Khansmith’s 25 leads Kaiser over Kaimuki

By Paul Honda on January 5, 2018

The Kaiser Cougars are searching for a few good men. The line of defense has been in need of fortification, coach Branden Kawazoe said. They took a big step toward building that wall on Friday with a 70-52 win over Kaimuki at the Cougars’ gym. “We started the game better than we have before,” Kawazoe said. “We had a good hour-and-a-half film session yesterday and a 30-minute session before the game today. We’re just trying to focus on defensive intensity, […]

Freitas, Torres, Livai among Kahuku coaching applicants

By Nick Abramo on January 5, 2018

Makoa Freitas, Reggie Torres and Siuaki Livai are among the applicants and interviewees for the open Kahuku football coaching job, according to sources. At least 16 people applied for the job, a list that also includes Kahuku junior varsity head coach Sterling Carvalho, Red Raiders assistant David Te’o and former Kahuku assistant Marvin Cravens. Freitas spent 2017 as the interim head coach for the Red Raiders, going 11-2 and losing 31-28 to Saint Louis in the Open Division championship game. […]

2000 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 5, 2018

The turn of the millennium in 2000 basically served as the launching point for Kahuku’s run of championships that has lasted 17 years. The Red Raiders won the first of what is now eight state titles, ending Saint Louis’ incredible 14-year streak of championships (13 Prep Bowls, one state title) with a 26-20 victory in the D-I state final. Coach of the year Siuaki Livai and defensive player and lineman of the year Chris Kemoe’atu, a 6-foot-5, 330-pound monster in […]

Fractional differences: #1 Punahou edges #4 Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on January 4, 2018

What can a coach say to his team after playing well enough to beat just about any team in the state? The Maryknoll Spartans limited No. 1 Punahou to 36-percent shooting (12-for-33), battled the visitors evenly (24-all) on the boards, and had a 17-6 lead after one quarter. Kelly Grant was far from upset about his team’s 47-42 loss in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener. Fourth-ranked Maryknoll needed a few more hits from the perimeter and a few more […]
