Pupule ballot: Kapolei, Kahuku continue rise

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2018

We have reached a point in the high school boys basketball season when everything has been sifted through. We know Punahou is the cream of the crop. No, wait. Is it Kamehameha? It’s one of those two, and that’s backed with facts and results. But now is just now. The season is still young. St. Francis is done with tackling Division I powerhouses until next season, though I’m all for a few exhibition games between the Saints and ‘Iolani or […]

Q&A: HBA’s 5-time ILH, 2-time state champ Ally Wada

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2018

Somehow, between club volleyball and basketball training, trips all over the mainland, high school success — five ILH titles and two state championships — Ally Wada finds time to perfect the most important art in her life. She’s really, really good at baking brownies. Wada, a 5-foot-9 senior at Hawaii Baptist, is also really, really good at school. Right now, Hawaii Baptist is ranked No. 9 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, one of only two Division II programs […]

HAWAII GROWN: Tua pulls off miracle

By Billy Hull on January 8, 2018

It was a night that even Tua Tagovailoa himself couldn’t have dreamed of. The Saint Louis alumnus, who 13 months ago led the Crusaders to a state championship as a senior in Hawaii, rallied Alabama to a thrilling 26-23 overtime win over Georgia on Monday night in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Atlanta, Ga. Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes after replacing starter Jalen Hurts to begin the second half. All three were huge plays, but the game-winning […]

A lot on the line in OIA girls basketball Tuesday

By Billy Hull on January 8, 2018

Other than OIA West regular season champion Mililani, which has locked up the top seed in the OIA playoffs as the only undefeated OIA team remaining, just about everyone else is playing for something on the final day of the regular season Tuesday. The schedule makers should give themselves a pat on the back for the matchups that line the Tuesday schedule. In the West, Campbell (7-2), which won seven straight games in the regular season in 2017 before losing […]

1969 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 8, 2018

There was a lot of change on the horizon after the 1969 season. The ILH was about to split into public and private school divisions, which ultimately set the stage for the public schools leaving the ILH for the OIA. Kamehameha won the 1969 ILH championship and was led by senior Steve Hookano, a split end and flanker who won the player of the year honor from the Honolulu Advertiser. Farrington’s Onosai Tanuvasa was the back of the year and […]

1989 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 7, 2018

Saint Louis won its fourth consecutive Prep Bowl in 1989 with its best team yet. The Crusaders, behind coach of the year Cal Lee, finished 16th in the country according to USA Today’s Super 25 rankings and extended their winning streak to a staggering 54 games. Saint Louis linebacker Kalei Kaanoi was named the defensive player of the year, but it was the first time in three years Saint Louis did not sweep the top awards on both sides of […]
