Damien’s Faufata-Pedrina shines in Paradise Classic

By Christian Shimabuku on January 11, 2018

Damien’s Marcus Faufata-Pedrina thought his high school football career was over in November, back when the Monarchs fell to Hilo in the Division I state final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. But the senior took full advantage of another opportunity to play on Thursday night, leading Hawaii East to a 19-14 victory over Hawaii West in the nightcap of the JPS Paradise Classic semifinals at Aloha Stadium. Faufata-Pedrina, who has received some college interest and earned an […]

No. 1 Maryknoll holds off No. 2 Kamehameha, 45-36

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2018

Chico Furtado is not quite quite Santa Claus, at least not on the basketball court. In the moments after No. 1 Maryknoll pulled out a tough 45-36 win over No. 2 Kamehameha — at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium — that elusive perfect performance eluded the Lady Spartans. So what’s new? Even at 21-2 overall, 7-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play, moving one big step closer to an automatic state-tournament berth, Maryknoll didn’t have the consistency its grizzled coach seeks. The difference, […]

Scoreboard tilt? HBA, St. Francis clash on Friday

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2018

When Kalaheo beat Farrington 102-94 in an OIA boys basketball game more than three decades ago, it was about talent and transition and depth. No one knew then that it would remain the highest-scoring game by a losing team for years on end. But those two teams had the depth to keep the scoreboard operator in workout mode. On paper, a major ILH D-II matchup between high scoring St. Francis and Hawaii Baptist would seem to be a candidate to […]

Milton finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting and was the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the […]

1994 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 10, 2018

Talk about a slam dunk player of the year. Saint Louis’ George Ornellas was called “one of the greatest Hawaii high school players of all time” in the first sentence of the Honolulu Advertiser’s All-State story in 1994. The Star-Bulletin said Ornellas did more in one year with the Crusaders than most athletes can do in three years. Ornellas set four ILH scoring records and was the offensive player of the year by both newspapers for the second year in […]
