Pupule ballot: Dragons, Vikings, Warriors rise

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2018

Unlike the girls basketball ballot I posted, the boys didn’t have any major or middling upsets, so there aren’t any really seismic moves here. The state of teams battling for playoff byes and positioning, though, is a fascinating and wild ecosystem into itself. Who knows what will come next? Below, my ballot and extended list of top 35 teams. And please feel free to disagree — and post your top 35. Results and win-loss records as of Saturday, Jan. 13. […]

Nothing settled after first Kaiser/Kalani meeting

By Billy Hull on January 17, 2018

The Kaiser and Kalani boys soccer teams have engaged in a memorable rivalry through the years, especially recently as not just two of the better teams in the OIA East, but the entire state. The Falcons won the state title in 2013 and advanced to the state final in 2015, losing to Mililani. The Cougars beat the Falcons in the OIA third-place game a year ago, and then beat Hilo, ILH champion ‘Iolani and Baldwin to advance to the state […]

Young Cougars down, but not out

By Paul Honda on January 17, 2018

Kaiser’s magical season isn’t quite over. The Lady Cougars fell 51-28 in OIA quarterfinal play at Mililani on Wednesday night, but they can qualify for the state tournament with a win over Leilehua. Kaiser, a very young team with just two seniors, was cold from the field from start to finish. Mililani switched from man to 2-3 zone defense after one quarter and the move worked out for the Trojans. Kaiser shot 2-for-11 from the field against the zone and […]

Trojans earn state berth, but may lose Gibson

By Paul Honda on January 17, 2018

With a state-tournament berth on the line, the Lady Trojans of Mililani played one of their best games of the season. A 51-28 win over Kaiser was soured, however, by a potential season-ending injury to senior Kalena Gibson. The lanky forward fell under the backboard on a fastbreak drive during the third quarter and suffered what might be an ACL injury, interim head coach Francis Dagan said. Her value as a the team’s lockdown defensive stopper could be a major […]

2010 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 17, 2018

The year 2010 was the first prep football season after the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers merged in June. With Kahuku forced to forfeit all of its games due to the use of an ineligible player and unable to compete in the state tournament, that made things pretty easy for ILH champion Saint Louis, which rolled to a state title and swept the top awards. Quarterback Marcus Mariota was the offensive player of the year and defensive lineman Juda […]

Hawaii Volleyball Combine back for 9th year

By Billy Hull on January 17, 2018

More than 60 colleges nationwide are expected to be represented at the ninth annual Hawaii Volleyball Combine held Friday through Sunday at Manoa Valley District Park. This year, there are 311 high school student athletes registered for the event, including players from the neighbor islands. The combine was established in 2009 to assist local players in getting noticed by mainland schools for recruiting purposes without the added expense of travel to the mainland. Club coaches from most of the local […]

Moanalua pulls away from Kapolei in OIA playoffs

By Paul Honda on January 16, 2018

It was a clash of two hot teams in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I playoffs. Kapolei had a defensive strategy to stifle Moanalua. The visiting Hurricanes just couldn’t take care of the ball. Moanalua forced the ‘Canes into 25-percent shooting and 30 turnovers for a 38-22 win on Tuesday night. Moanalua, the fourth-place team from the East, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls basketball playoffs. Kapolei, the fifth-place team from the West, […]

Tuitele’s recruitment reaching another level

By Billy Hull on January 16, 2018

Hawaii once produced the No. 4-ranked defensive recruit in the country when Punahou’s Manti Teo signed with Notre Dame in 2009. Recently, the islands have produced the Elite 11 winning quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa of Saint Louis, who signed with Alabama and led the Crimson Tide to a national championship, spurring a second-half comeback in a win over Georgia in overtime. The top junior prospect in the state is Saint Louis defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele, who is one of four prospects […]
