Gatorade award goes to Kamehameha’s Akeo

Kamehameha junior setter Lexis Akeo was named the Gatorade Hawaii girls volleyball player of the year today. Akeo led the Warriors the Division I state title and was named most valuable player of the tournament after tallying 35 assists, 11 digs, three kills, three block assists and an ace in a sweep of ‘Iolani in the final. Polynesian Bowl week kicked off Monday with the arrival of players and the draft party at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. The rosters for Team Makai, coached by Terry Donahue, and Team Mauka, coached by Dick Vermeil, were set. Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Danny Shelton is the honorary captain for Team Makai while San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, a Punahou alumnus, holds the same honor for the Mauka squad. Coaches, media make Punahou unanimous No. 1

For the fifth week in a row, the Punahou Buffanblu are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. It is the second time this season that Punahou is a unanimous selection by coaches and media. Punahou (20-1, 4-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) extended its winning streak to 14 games with victories over No. 2 Kamehameha (66-59) and Saint Louis (73-63) last week. Mariota to appear at Polynesian Bowl

Tennessee Titans quarterback and Saint Louis School alum Marcus Mariota will make public appearances as part of the week-long festivities leading up to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster, who earlier this month was named the Polynesian Football player of the year, will also be in town for the game. Maryknoll still No. 1, Hilo lands at No. 9

For the seventh week in a row, the Maryknoll Spartans are the unanimous pick by coaches and media as the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. The Spartans repelled Mid-Pacific 64-44, then-No. 2 Kamehameha 45-36 and Punahou 60-26 last week. Maryknoll is 8-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (22-2 overall) and has clinched at least a tie for first place in the regular season.
