1978 prep football all-star teams

By Jerry Campany on January 20, 2018

The 1978 Prep Bowl saw Waianae quarterback Michael Beazley throw a touchdown pass on one of only two completed passes in the entire game to lead the Seariders to a 14-6 win over Kamehameha. That wasn’t an indication of how voting for the All-State teams by both newspapers went, however. Saint Louis’ Wayne Apuna was the player of the year from both newspapers and teammate Paul Goo, a quarterback, was the back of the year. Apuna was dominant on both […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 19, 2018

Missy Moore had barely caught her breath after Kamehameha’s shootout victory over ‘Iolani to clinch a state tournament berth on Friday when the Warriors coach addressed the new format to the ILH girls soccer season. “It’s a lot more stressful,” Moore said as the Warriors’ celebrated a return to states after missing the tournament last year. Kamehameha and ‘Iolani split 1-0 wins in the regular season and closed the schedule at 9-1-1, forcing a playoff for the league’s first-round title […]

Maryknoll blanks Punahou in final 3 minutes for win

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2018

Most leagues in Hawaii, at least in boys basketball, are fairly predictable. Occasionally, there’s some seismic activity, but the expectation is well formed in advance. In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, where iron always sharpens iron, there is no mercy for the weak, no pity for the punchless. And No. 1 Punahou seemed to contradict everything known about the gauntlet. Until tonight. With a stunning 49-48 win over the Buffanblu in their house, No. 4 Maryknoll not only broke the […]

Watching Saint Louis alum Tua Tagovailoa, as a true freshman, come off the bench to throw three touchdown passes for Alabama in an overtime win over Georgia caused quite the frenzy, both in real life and on social media. Tagovailoa was quickly trending nationwide on Twitter and many of Hawaii’s up-and-coming football players were quick to send their praise. Punahou senior Alama Uluave decided to have some fun with […]
