The hard-throwing right-hander turned in a solid four-plus innings, striking out five while holding the Rainbow Wahine to three hits in the Bears’ 5-0 win to open the […]

The MPI shortstop ignited a 16-hit attack with his leadoff single in the top of the first, added a double and a triple, scored three runs and drove in another in the third-ranked Owls’ resounding 14-5 win over No. 5 Kamehameha to start the ILH season on Wednesday in Hawaii Kai. By Jason Kaneshiro on February 28, 2018

Just three weeks into Kahi Ka’anoi’s tenure as Kamehameha baseball coach, the Warriors opened the ILH season in the midst of a steep learning curve. But the schedule goes on and after a turbulent preseason, the Warriors absorbed a 14-5 loss to No. 3 Mid-Pacific to begin the league schedule on Wednesday at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai. By Nick Abramo on February 28, 2018

There is not much separating Campbell baseball from Mililani baseball. That’s always how it is out in the OIA West. The two are at it again. No. 8 Campbell came through with a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Mililani in the season opener at the Trojans’ field on Wednesday. Pitching and defense and taking advantage of whatever you can take advantage of on offense. Mililani had a total of four base runners and two of them got as far as […]

By Paul Honda on February 28, 2018

We are now officially just over five hours into the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball regular season. ‘Iolani, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, came through with a tough 8-5 win over No. 4 Saint Louis on a cloudy, cool afternoon at the Raiders’ field. Cloudy? Cool? In Lower Moiliili? There were other interesting elements at play. ‘Iolani rolled out their new uniforms, what might be described as power red jerseys with ice pewter numbers and pants. Really […]

New-look Hurricanes rout defending OIA champ Mililani

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2018

A veteran coach like Keoke Behic has the countenance of a chef undertaking a massive task. Urgency? Check. Patience? Of course. Perspective? Infinite. Kapolei’s 9-2 win over Mililani in the OIA regular-season opener for each team was, first and foremost, just one game. But with the OIA West looking more and more like a newer version of the ILH in recent softball seasons, the win was huge. Beating defending league champion Mililani is a rare feat. Doing it with a […]

Hawaii Baptist gets taste of D-I volleyball

By Nick Abramo on February 27, 2018

Hawaii Baptist is an underdog in boys volleyball for the first time in a long time and coach Teoni Obrey is loving it. Winning nine of the last 10 state Division II championships is a good feeling too, but the Eagles are up on a higher level now. Lumps will appear — and they’ve already started appearing on the team’s proverbial forehead — before the Hawaii volleyball world finds out if the school will flounder or succeed in D-I. But […]
