Five different teams picked No. 1 in baseball

By Billy Hull on March 12, 2018

Entering the third week of the regular season in prep baseball, only one thing is clear. Nobody has any idea who the best team in the state is. For the first time since the first poll of the 2016 season, five different teams were ranked No. 1 this week out of the 10 voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. It’s not uncommon for as many as five teams to be picked No. 1 in a poll to start […]

Leilehua still No. 1, ahead of Kamehameha, Campbell

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2018

Math is math. The way it came about is as strange as it gets. Leilehua remains at No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 today despite a loss to then No. 7 Mililani — and despite receiving just one out of 11 first-place votes. The Lady Mules reached No. 1 in the poll last week, a first in recent years. Leilehua beat then-No. 10 Pearl City before losing at home (Kaala Elementary School field) to the Trojans, 5-3. […]

By Billy Hull on March 11, 2018

Today the Honolulu Star-Advertiser released its girls basketball All-State Fab 15 team, marking the 30th consecutive year a newspaper had put out on All-State team in girls basketball. Next Sunday, the Star-Advertiser will release its boys basketball All-State Fab 15 selections, marking the 40th consecutive year a newspaper has put out an All-State team in boys basketball dating back to the Honolulu Advertiser’s 1978 squad. As we did with girls basketball, we have put together the newspaper clippings from each […]

Konawaena’s Molina repeats as player of the year

By Jerry Campany on March 11, 2018

For the eighth time in 10 seasons, the top girls basketball player from the state hails from Kona. Of course, those eight player of the year awards belong to only three people and for the fifth year in a row, the winner has the same last name. Konawaena’s Cherilyn Molina adds her second All-State player of the year award following older sister Chanelle Molina, who just completed her sophomore season at Washington State. Chanelle won three, Cherilyn has two and […]

Moanalua hands Kaiser first loss

By Paul Honda on March 10, 2018

The patience of Scott Yamada is almost supernatural. Never too high. Never too low. A man who has unique skills as a coach, a teacher of young men, and even a green thumb on of the most beautifully manicured diamonds in all the Hawaiian islands. Nothing, though, brings relief the way his team’s bats did on a hot, then cold afternoon at Kaiser on Saturday. Na Menehune spanked 13 base hits, drawing six walks from Kaiser pitchers for good measure, […]

Girls basketball All-State teams: 2008-2017

By Billy Hull on March 10, 2018

Sunday will mark the 30th consecutive Hawaii girls basketball All-State team when the Honolulu Star-Advertiser releases its 2018 edition. In the lead up to the release of the All-State team, we will look back at the first 30 years — 10 at a time — to remember some of the great girls basketball players of all time. Enjoy. Previous: 1998 to 2007 Previous: 1988 to 1997 Note: Frank Mauz did a girls basketball All-State team for the Honolulu Advertiser in […]

Castle’s Hao tries to smooth Rocky transition

By Nick Abramo on March 9, 2018

Going in to Friday’s Kailua vs. Castle baseball game, we heard reports there would be a new head coach in Castle’s home dugout. We just didn’t know who it would be. Maybe the reports of a transition were overblown. Maybe it would still be Rocky Fraticelli, the Knights’ coach on the diamond since 2012. Sure enough, though, Fraticelli was not in the dugout. But who was that in there, wearing his maroon cap and sunglasses? After No. 6 Kailua’s 11-0 […]

Saint Louis hands Mid-Pacific first loss in extra innings

By Christian Shimabuku on March 9, 2018

Just when it seemed that No. 2 Mid-Pacific could gain a little separation from the rest of the ILH, No. 5 Saint Louis showed the Owls what life in the league is about in a 6-5 victory at Goeas Field on Friday afternoon. It took the Crusaders (2-2) eight innings to hand the Owls (3-1) their first loss, but after committing six errors against a team that feeds off of them, coach George Gusman will gladly take it. “(Mid-Pacific) is […]
