By Christian Shimabuku on March 17, 2018

The logjam at the top of the ILH standings () is still ever-shifting after Saturday’s games, thanks to No. 10 Kamehameha’s 7-6 win over No. 6 Punahou in eight innings. With less than a month remaining before the regular season comes to a close, the Warriors seem as well-prepared as anyone for the uncertainty that the league brings. It started in late January, when head coach Thomas Perkins and his staff were let go two days before tryouts and Kahi […]

By Paul Honda on March 17, 2018

It wasn’t checkers or chess. Punahou vs. Maryknoll on a summer-hot afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium was more like Risk. Every decision, every pitch, everything that could change momentum played out from start to finish as the Buffanblu pulled out a 5-4 win in eight innings. The rankings — Punahou entered tied at No. 6 and Maryknoll is No. 4 — will fluctuate with an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I cast of teams that is impossible to predict. Parity […]

Gusman stands ground, ejected for first time in 47 years

By Paul Honda on March 15, 2018

A lot of improbable things have happened since 1971. None of them included an ejection of baseball coach George Gusman. That is, until today. Gusman, who has coached from intermediate to varsity levels at Kamehameha and Saint Louis, was thrown out in the third inning as his Crusaders battled the Warriors on a hot, sunny afternoon at Ala Wai Field. It wasn’t a blatant, animated ejection. But the scenario that led to it left Gusman, who officiates BCS college football […]

No. 6 Punahou starting to stand out in the ILH

By Billy Hull on March 15, 2018

When the week started, six of the seven Division I baseball teams in the ILH were within a game of first place. Sure, it’s still somewhat early in the season, but by week’s end, teams will be close to halfway through the regular season. A slate of three games in five days for most teams this week provides an opportunity for schools to separate themselves from the rest of the league. No. 6 Punahou seems on the verge of doing […]
