Kaiser holds on in battle of undefeated teams

By Christian Shimabuku on March 20, 2018

Kaiser has taken the lead in the OIA East softball race after a 6-4 home win over Roosevelt. Both teams were undefeated heading into Tuesday’s matchup, but the Cougars gained an early edge thanks in large part to the Aholelei sisters. All four of them had a hand in the victory, helping the Cougars improve to 6-0 while the Rough Riders dropped to 5-1. Primrose Aholeilei tossed a complete game, striking out four and walking one while giving up eight […]

Damien embracing D-I competition

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2018

No, the Damien Monarchs aren’t a clone of Mid-Pacific. But there’s just a faint resemblance, and it goes beyond the light gray uniforms each team wore in the second-ranked Owls’ 13-3, five-inning win on Tuesday afternoon. Like MPI, the Monarchs have stressed defensive fundamentals in their rise to prominence in Division II. Damien won the ILH D-II crown last season, outlasting St. Francis in a marathon playoff run and series, before losing to Kauai in the state final. The Monarchs […]

Q&A: Kahuku hoopster, All-State POY Tolu Smith

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2018

There has never been a player quite like Tolu Smith in the islands at the prep level. At 6-foot-10, he’s neither a pure center or swingman, but a hybrid of both without losing any of the consciousness that makes him impossible to stop on the block. Yes, at the next level, Smith’s triple-threat wing fundamentals will come into play much more often, but for now, the Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year knows he did all he could. Kahuku rose […]

Q&A: Punahou terminator Kana‘i Akana

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2018

Maybe Kana‘i Akana absorbed the sport before he could walk. Maybe it’s just natural. But life with family peppering volleyballs at the beach doesn’t account for a near supernatural focus and drive in the game. “The thing I love most about Kana‘i,” Punahou coach Rick Tune said, “that guy can have a singular focus and be relentless about getting it.” Akana, featured in Tuesday’s Star-Advertiser, has the kind of ferocity and unity with teammates that helps make Punahou (7-0) the standard-setter […]

Sanchez: Saint Louis vs. Bishop Gorman a no go

By Nick Abramo on March 19, 2018

Bishop Gorman is not coming to Aloha Stadium for an Aug. 31 game against Saint Louis, Gaels coach Kenny Sanchez told Hawaii Prep World on Monday. “That doesn’t sit well with me,” Crusaders coach Cal Lee said Monday. “But I can’t blame the head coach. I was taking Chris Brown’s word for it.” Brown, a former All-WAC player for Hawaii and now an assistant at Bishop Gorman, did not immediately return a Monday call. For a Feb. 13 Hawaii Prep […]

Sol-Jay Maiava’s stepdad posted on Instagram on Sunday night that he and his wife and stepson, Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, are visiting Washington, D.C., so Sol-Jay can look into playing football there for his upcoming junior season. A photo of Sol-Jay and his parents is on the post with the words, “And we’re off to the 202 (Washington D.C. area code)!!! Thank you to my mom, my dad and my siblings and their other halves for watching our other kiddies […]

Kamehameha takes throne, No. 1 in softball poll

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2018

The softball shuffle is simply stunning. For the third time in four weeks of the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10, there is a new No. 1. Kamehameha moved up from No. 2 to the top spot today after collecting six of the 10 first-place votes. The Warriors are 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. They overpowered Mid-Pacific 13-1 in five innings last week. Campbell, which was atop the throne in the opening week of the poll, gathered […]
