Trip swayed Pa‘ama to pick UW over USC

By Nick Abramo on April 12, 2018

Kaimuki defensive lineman Evangelist “Sama” Pa‘ama announced his commitment to the University of Washington on Sunday, giving the Huskies a Division II recruit from Hawaii for the second straight recruiting class. Pa‘ama made his decision based on his successful recruiting trip there. Prior to that, he had his heart set on Southern California. Aside from Washington and USC, seven other schools have offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-5, 330-pound Pa‘ama — Arizona, Arizona State, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah and Virginia. […]

Raiders keep hope alive for regular season

By Paul Honda on April 11, 2018

It’s going to take a miracle, maybe, for anyone to catch the high-flying Mid-Pacific Owls. The Raiders dominated St. Francis 12-2 in six innings on Wednesday and is still mathematically in the running with a 9-3-1 record. ‘Iolani needs MPI to lose its last two regular-season games to have a shot at the top. Domingo, Sales help Sabers walk off against Mules

By Paul Honda on April 10, 2018

’Tis the season of offensive forces throughout the leagues of softball. Pitching as a whole seems steady, but far from dominant. The cycle goes up and down, and coaches are hoping their underclassmen can rise to the challenge. Third-ranked Campbell got a memorable effort from sophomore Chloe Sales on Tuesday in a 6-5 comeback win over No. 2 Leilehua. It was quite the splash for the Sabers. The matchup with Leilehua had been postponed twice due to soggy conditions. Though […]

By Billy Hull on April 10, 2018

It has become a thankless job over the years and some of Hawaii’s finest student-athletes are trying to change that. The ILH Student Advisory Committee — a group of 36 student-athletes representing all 19 ILH schools who meet multiple times a year to discuss issues statewide and nationally, volunteer for community service projects and learn sportsmanship and leadership skills to take back to their athletic teams within the ILH — has put together Officials Appreciation Week that started Monday and ends on […]

Q&A: MPI shortstop/slugger Wyatt Young

By Paul Honda on April 10, 2018

Away from the diamond, Wyatt Young seems like any scholar-athlete at Mid-Pacific Institute. Once the practice gear is on, Young is in his preferred state of mind. He can practice and hone his craft as a hitter morning, noon and night. And he does, given any opportunity. “He loves baseball,” longtime friend and teammate Micah Pi said. “I think of baseball, I think of Wyatt. I’m not even kidding.” Coach Dunn Muramaru recalls the times when Young would ask when […]
