Tacon out as Kamehameha hoops coach

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2018

Greg Tacon is no longer the boys basketball coach at Kamehameha, according to three sources who requested anonymity because the school has not made an official announcement. The sources said Tacon was let go within the last two weeks. Multiple calls to Tacon and Kamehameha athletic director Glennie Adams last week and this week were not returned. The Warriors went 6-4 in the ILH in the recently concluded winter season and failed to qualify for the Division I state tournament. […]

Micah Pi is Mid-Pacific’s insPIration

By Paul Honda on April 10, 2018

Mid-Pacific baseball is about strength in numbers. Efficiency. Every batter, every fielder having a common goal. Statistics are nice, but making the right play? That’s not so automatic with every baseball team. The Owls preach consistency, selflessness, discipline. It is not a desire. It is the expectation. That all-for-one mentality is why a senior like Micah Pi isn’t comfortable with the spotlight. Not for his .370 batting average and .452 on-base percentage. Not for his sterling defensive play in right […]

Young, Yoshino clutch up for first-place MPI

By Paul Honda on April 9, 2018

There was concern on Kahi Kaanoi’s face. It wasn’t quite worry, but the first-year Kamehameha baseball coach isn’t comfortable with the pattern of late for his title-contending team. “It seems like our errors and walks come back to bite us. It’s happened a lot in these last three or four games,” he said after Mid-Pacific rallied for a 5-2 win at Damon Field on a sunny Monday afternoon. The win improved MPI’s mark to 10-2 and set the Warriors back. […]

It’s the first visit to the top spot this season for the Kapolei under first-year head coach Keoke Behic. The Hurricanes are one of three teams from the OIA West occupying the […]

By Billy Hull on April 9, 2018

An eight-game winning streak since suffering its only loss of the regular season in 12 innings has Campbell all the way up to No. 2 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 released today. The Sabers (10-1) have clinched the No. 1 seed for the OIA playoffs out of the West and have outscored their opponents 39-9 during their current winning streak which includes four shutouts. Ranches’ big day fuels Campbell in win

By Christian Shimabuku on April 7, 2018

Alesia Ranches was unstoppable on Saturday for Campbell, making her presence known at the plate and in center field during a 5-2 victory over Pearl City. Ranches, who admits she was going through bit of a slump heading in to the game, returned to form in a big way. The junior went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI in addition to stellar outfield play. The win for Campbell breaks a streak of consecutive losses to Kapolei and […]

Gritty Spartans relish their resourcefulness

By Paul Honda on April 6, 2018

From the pristine field they built from scratch on Sand Island, to the scrappy, patient approach to every at-bat, the Maryknoll Spartans are very resourceful. That’s what makes any long, grind of a game something the Lady Spartans relish. They went back and forth with ‘Iolani on a sunny, breezy Friday afternoon, winning 9-5 in a game that took nearly 150 minutes to complete. Victory tastes just the same whether it’s a quick game or a slow one for Maryknoll, […]
