Home runs in softball at a record pace

By Jerry Campany on May 4, 2018

The home run explosion is not limited to Major League Baseball. The hitters on the highest level of softball in Hawaii have evolved as well. While the MLB has its Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Nolan Arenado, the HHSAA boasts of Jocelyn Alo, Mysha Sataraka and Kelsie Hee. There has been an average of more than one home run per game in each of the last three years of the state tournament, the first time that has ever happened. The […]

By Nick Abramo on May 4, 2018

Punahou senior Andrei Iosivas is trying to end his season with a bang, and he has already begun to do so. Last Saturday at Kamehameha, Iosivas broke three ILH track and field title meet records. On May 11 and 12, he’ll be trying to make his mark on state meet history in the season’s championship finale, also at Kamehameha. Iosivas, who also played football as a wide receiver for the Buffanblu, broke a 27-year-old league record with a 10.71-second time […]

12 aces later, ‘Iolani advances and KS-Maui is out

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2018

How far back in time would Kamehameha-Maui have to go to find an appearance in the finals or semifinals of the boys volleyball state championships? While Kamehameha-Hawaii had its glory years during the prep careers of four Enriques brothers and their father, Guy Enriques, not much can be said of Kamehameha-Maui. This year could’ve been different, especially after a 14-0 run through the Maui Interscholastic League. It wasn’t meant to be, though. ILH runner-up ‘Iolani, a chiseled, sharpened force that […]

Maryknoll retains ILH softball crown

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 3, 2018

Maryknoll softball coach John Uekawa insisted the Spartans’ path to a second straight ILH championship wasn’t similar to the route they followed last year. “It’s not similar,” Uekawa said. “it’s exactly (the same).” Other than a change of venue for the championship game, the Spartans indeed took the long road to the title the last two seasons. They captured the program’s first league crown with a win at Kamehameha a year ago. This time, Maryknoll traveled just across Wilder Ave. […]

Energized Menehune sweep KS-Hawaii

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2018

The preparation goes back a long way for Moanalua. Even on game day, Na Menehune didn’t waste a moment. They were in warmup mode in an afternoon workout on their home court. Then it was a bus ride to McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Instead of another warmup session, the hyped-up Menehune danced to the in-house music. They stood in a circle and played Duck-Duck-Goose. They hollered and yelled. By the start of their quarterfinal match with Kamehameha-Hawaii, Moanalua was ready. […]
