Sharks top Konawaena for club lacrosse title

The Honolulu Sharks, with players from various schools, defeated Konawaena High 3-2 in the Founders Cup high school club lacrosse championship Sunday at Kapiolani Park. It’s the fourth title in a row for coach Thomas Syverson and his Sharks squad. In tournament pool play, the Sharks tied Punahou 2-2 and Konawaena 2-2. HAWAII GROWN: Pedrina wins player of the year honor

Lewis-Clark State senior Raymond “Ali’i” Pedrina, a 2013 Campbell alumnus who also played baseball at Kamehameha, was named the NAIA West player of the year on Sunday as voted on by the league’s coaches. Pedrina, a senior outfielder who redshirted in 2016 with an injury, batted .356 in 40 games with 14 doubles, five triples, six homers and 34 RBIs. We’re down to our last few prep football all-star teams. Undefeated Saint Louis led the way with five selections on the Honolulu Advertiser’s ILH all-star team in 1949. Punahou, which beat out Saint Louis for the ILH championship in 1953, tied the Crusaders with three players each on the ILH all-star team by the Honolulu Advertiser. Punahou guard Wendell Marino and Saint Louis running back Talbot George were the only underclassmen on the first team. Punahou junior linebacker Maninoa Tufono, the No. 48 overall prospect in the class of 2019 according to 247Sports.com, has narrowed down his college options. Punahou senior Nicolas Nakaoka got a bit “flippant” Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Buffanblu judoka beat Kapolei’s Branden Pagurayan by ippon in 0:48 of the 161-pound final of the state judo championships. And then he did a backflip.
