Nos. 1 and 2 collide on Friday night

By Billy Hull on September 3, 2018

It’s a matchup fans have gotten used to seeing every season, but just not quite this early. No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 2 Kahuku, which again held the top two spots in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 this week, will play Friday night at Aloha Stadium for the fourth straight season. It will be the first time during that span that a state title won’t be on the line. Not since Aug. 17, 2013, have the two teams […]

‘Canes get big win and big fun in So Cal

By Paul Honda on September 3, 2018

If the Kapolei Hurricanes needed a turning point this season, they may have reached it. The ‘Canes made the most of their opportunity in California, earning a stunning 23-14 win over Downey, ranked No. 8 by the Long Beach Press-Telegram. The same poll has St. John Bosco at No. 1 and Long Beach Poly at No. 2. The way Kapolei (2-2) overcame adversity is what makes the victory remarkable. With their starting quarterback out with injury, sophomore Noa Bailey stepped […]

Saint Louis returns to the Top 10

By Billy Hull on September 2, 2018

They haven’t played in two weeks, yet the Saint Louis Crusaders have found themselves in the top 10 in the country, out of it, and back in it. The Crusaders (2-0), who haven’t played since a 47-7 blowout victory over Narbonne (Calif.) on Aug. 17, moved back up a spot to No. 10 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings released Sunday evening. (MONDAY UPDATE: Saint Louis moved up two spots to No. 11 in the USA Today Super 25). […]

VIDEO: Saint Louis DT Faatui Tuitele, Part 2

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2018

In part 2 of our sit-down with Saint Louis defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele, the 6-foot-4, 299-pound senior chats about Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, and his favorite food: Korean chicken from Zippy’s. Tuitele’s team has a bye this week, but is ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, and is also ranked nationally.

VIDEO: Punahou, ‘Iolani start off with a thriller

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2018

The young, tall, composed Punahou Buffanblu stepped onto ‘Iolani’s home court with full confidence. It showed as the visitors took the opening set before a robust audience that nearly filled the gym. Then ‘Iolani simmered down and rallied for a 20-25, 25-12, 25-16 victory during opening week of the ILH girls volleyball regular season. The Raiders are ranked No. 11 by MaxPreps and No. 21 in the country by USA Today.

Soares making a difference as DC at Kalaheo

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2018

The Kalaheo Mustangs are starting to look like contenders. It’s not so much that their last two wins were shutouts, it’s more the way they’ve looked while doing it. There is way too much left in the season to tell for sure if Kalaheo will seriously contend for the OIA D-II title. And it’s important to remember that the Mustangs’ two wins are against McKinley and Waialua — two teams who have, much like Kalaheo, usually been near the bottom […]

Punahou’s 1-2 punch at running back tough to deal with

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2018

Punahou quarterback Hugh Brady passed 50 times in Saturday’s 40-14 victory over Farrington. A casual fan might think that the Buffanblu are all about the aerial game, but that is wrong. No. 5 Punahou has a real-deal backfield, with the nimble Vincent Terrell and the smashmouth Sitiveni Kaufusi. So while Brady was throwing for 290 yards on a somewhat erratic night in which he completed 19 of those 50 passes, Terrell and Kaufusi were lighting it up on the ground. […]

Punahou’s big blue wall stifles Farrington

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2018

Punahou’s defensive unit wastes no lessons, to be sure. In the fifth-ranked Buffanblu’s 40-14 win over Farrington at Skippa Diaz Stadium on Saturday, the Buffanblu stuffed the box and provided tight press coverage from beginning to end. Farrington’s offense mustered seven first downs all night, including two by penalty. Linebacker Maninoa Tufono wasn’t surprised by Farrington’s power up front, but the Buffanblu defense was ready. Over and over, they read Farrington’s play-action schemes perfectly, sometimes covering pass catchers before the […]
