HAWAII GROWN: Tua has career day

By Billy Hull on September 22, 2018

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a career day and still sat out the entire fourth quarter. The 2017 Saint Louis alumnus threw for a career-high 387 yards and accounted for a career-best five touchdowns in the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide’s 45-23 victory over No. 22 Texas A&M today at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Tagovailoa set career highs in passing attempts (30) and completions (22) and tied his best outing of four touchdown passes. His fifth score was on a […]

Mililani’s Gabriel on verge of state passing record

By Paul Honda on September 22, 2018

Dillon Gabriel means it when he says numbers are just numbers. With kickoff between No. 5 Mililani and Waianae more than nine hours away, the Trojan senior quarterback let the question soak in. What would it mean to you and the program to pass Tua Tagovailoa and become the state’s all-time career passing record holder? Tagovailoa set his record as a senior at Saint Louis two seasons ago. Just 320 yards behind the current starting QB at Alabama, Gabriel has […]

Win No. 20 in a row not easy for No. 1 Saint Louis

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 22, 2018

Saint Louis managed to survive without its starting quarterback on Friday, although the Crusaders’ 20th consecutive win wasn’t secure until the clock hit :00. With quarterback Jayden de Laura sidelined, the Saint Louis defense helped stake the top-ranked Crusaders to a 23-0 lead on Kapolei in an OIA-ILH Open Division matchup on the West side. But the defending state champions ended up having to sweat out the final seconds before a walk-off sack by Jordan Botelho and Stanley McKenzie finished […]

Punivai prolific again as Castle downs Kailua

By Brian McInnis on September 22, 2018

Things got off to an inauspicious start for Castle in its anticipated Windward rivalry matchup with Kailua. First, there were supposed to be Golden Knights paratroopers from the National Guard timed to land with the playing of the national anthem. The idea was, they’d present the game ball. A packed crowd waited anxiously for several minutes pregame … only to have it called off due to uncooperative winds in Kaneohe. Once things got going, the Knights were then tackled for […]

Moanalua still standing tall in OIA D-I

By Nick Abramo on September 22, 2018

No. 8 Moanalua is standing pretty tall in OIA Division I after a 31-13 victory over Damien on Friday. But just how good are Na Menehune? Five wins in five games is a great way to start a season, but everybody knows the games of real importance haven’t been played yet. Can this fast start (5-0 overall, 4-0 OIA D-I) glide easily into a sustained ending? Coach Savaii Eselu was mostly smiling after the homecoming win, which was played at […]

Aiea hangs tough against Leilehua

By Jeremy Nitta on September 22, 2018

After seeing their homecoming ruined by a 40-21 loss at the hands of Leilehua, it would seem easy for the Aiea football team to sulk, or get down on themselves. Instead, Na Alii finds themselves trying to embrace the positive outcomes and potential that was shown in the loss. “Leilehua almost beat Moanalua last week, and the week before, we played Moanalua pretty tough,” head coach Wendell Say said. Even with the perennial powerhouses of OIA football like Kahuku and […]

Maafala yearning for complete game by Warriors

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2018

On paper, it was a solid, sweet homecoming win for the Kamehameha Warriors. For head coach Abu Maafala, it was less than stellar. Kamehameha’s 32-21 win over Farrington featured a dominant first half. Kamehameha improved to 2-3 in ILH Open play (3-3 overall) with a hard-earned win. The sixth-ranked Warriors outgained No. 9 Farrington 301-14 en route to a 16-0 lead by intermission. The home team also was in control of the score, 32-7, early in the fourth quarter. What […]
