Hawaii offers St. Francis OL Ope Laloulu

By Billy Hull on October 20, 2018

Not all of the news has been bad for St. Francis offensive lineman Fa’aope Laloulu. A day after finding out his Saints would forfeit all of their wins and be unable to compete in the Division II state tournament, the highly-touted 6-foot-7, 340-pound offensive tackle received a scholarship offer from Hawaii. UH outside linebackers and nickelbacks coach Jacob Yoro extended the offer this morning. Hawaii hosts Nevada tonight at Aloha Stadium. Laloulu, a junior, now has six scholarship offers, trailing […]

Farrington gets final OIA Open playoff berth

By Billy Hull on October 20, 2018

Farrington won a three-team coin toss today for the last playoff spot in the OIA Open Division, Govs coach Daniel Sanchez said. The Governors (2-8 overall) finished in a three-way tie with Kapolei and Waianae at 1-4 in league games. Farrington will play at top-seeded Mililani on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. No. 2 seed Campbell (7-3, 4-1) will host No. 3 seed Kahuku (6-3, 3-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of the Sabers’ 28-27 win in Ewa […]

Kahuku honors Tommy Heffernan Sr. with emotional win

By Christian Shimabuku on October 20, 2018

Many tributes were paid to the late Tommy Heffernan Sr., who passed away on Tuesday, at Kahuku on Friday night. A shrine with pictures of Heffernan was placed outside of the Red Raiders’ locker room along with a chair that had his clothing on it, including a Vietnam War Veteran hat. Junior varsity and varsity players gathered and prayed there before and after their games. A moment of silence was also held before the varsity game. It was all a […]

Marauders flip the script on Mules

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 20, 2018

Turnovers fueled Leilehua’s second-half surge against Waipahu in their regular-season meeting. When the teams met again — with far higher stakes — on Friday, Waipahu did the taking. The Marauder secondary, living up to the school’s nickname, swiped four interceptions in the second half and Waipahu knocked off No. 9 Leilehua 29-6 in the semifinals of the OIA Division I playoffs. The win sent Waipahu, the division’s third seed, to next week’s championship game against the winner of Saturday’s semifinal […]

Kapolei’s season comes down to coin flip

By Brian McInnis on October 20, 2018

After a 33-13 loss at Kahuku on Friday night, the Kapolei Hurricanes’ season stands upon the edge of a coin. The Hurricanes (3-7 overall, 1-4 OIA Open Division) fell into a three-way tie with Farrington and Waianae for the last of four spots for the OIA Open Division playoffs. A coin flip, or flips, will determine which of those three teams faces OIA top seed Mililani. Coach Darren Hernandez gathered his players upon the Carleton E. Weimer field right after […]

Round 2: Campbell gets Kahuku again

By Nick Abramo on October 20, 2018

No. 4 Campbell only lost one OIA Open game this season and it was to third-ranked Mililani. You can bet Sabers coach Darren Johnson, whose team is red hot right now, wants another chance at those Trojans, who went 5-0 for a first-place league finish. To get the possibility of another shot at Mililani, the Sabers (7-3, 4-1) would have to beat No. 5 Kahuku (6-3, 3-2) in the OIA Open semifinals at home next weekend. It would be the […]

Punahou shuts out Kamehameha on way to ILH title game

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2018

This was one of the strangest 35-0 games in recent memory. No. 2 Punahou (7-2, 6-2) advanced to the ILH Open Division championship game with a lopsided win over No. 8 Kamehameha (4-6, 3-5), but it was defense instead of the usual offensive exploits that carried Punahou. “The kids performed really well. They played with discipline. Kamehameha’s very athletic with a big offensive line, good receivers, athletic quarterback, so we’re proud of the kids and the way they played,” Punahou […]

St. Francis forced to forfeit football season

By Nick Abramo on October 19, 2018

The St. Francis Saints football team, which finished 9-0 overall and 8-0 in ILH Division II, is forfeiting its season. The issue revolves around an ineligible player who was a fifth-year senior. UPDATE: St. Francis released a joint statement with the ILH this afternoon. “Due to misinformation in the admissions process five years ago, this fell through the cracks,” said Dr. Casey Asato, who became head of school in August. “It was brought to our attention and we need to […]
