No. 1 Saint Louis was already amped up for its first defensive play in Saturday’s ILH Open Division championship game when junior linebacker Jordan Botelho was given a clean lane toward Buffanblu quarterback Hugh Brady. It was a bit of a bittersweet night for Punahou senior linebacker Maninoa Tufono, but he still walked out of Aloha Stadium smiling. Moments after his football season ended with Punahou’s loss to Saint Louis for the ILH Open championship, he had a shout out for sister Mokihana Tufono, a freshman outside hitter for ‘Iolani. His sister’s team upset defending champion Kamehameha earlier in the evening to capture the Division I girls volleyball state championship at Blaisdell Arena.

The rematch between fifth-ranked Kahuku and fourth-ranked Campbell turned out much differently in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division semifinals. The Red Raiders sacked Campbell quarterback Kaniela Kalaola four times and turned two interceptions into touchdowns by Peter John Mataira and Ilaesa Fotu in the second quarter en route to a 27-7 victory.

Waipahu adds to the trophy case

Three weeks removed from dropping a second straight loss, Waipahu raised an OIA championship plaque for the second consecutive year. The Marauders broke out to a 5-2 start this season and were 4-0 against OIA Division I competition before stumbling to a 50-20 home loss to Leilehua, followed by a 29-5 drubbing by Moanalua at Aloha Stadium on Oct. 5.
