By Paul Honda on January 16, 2019

By the end of this day, four teams will see the end of their basketball season, never to play beyond their Oahu Interscholastic Association schedule again. Meanwhile, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Division I girls playoffs are in motion, at least off the court. Kamehameha and Maryknoll, which finished tied for second place on Tuesday, had a draw on Wednesday afternoon to determine which team will host the tiebreaker game. Maryknoll won the draw and will host Kamehameha […]

No. 2 Punahou escapes against No. 3 ‘Iolani 57-56

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2019

The numbers weren’t so shiny for No. 2 Punahou. The grit certainly was there in abundance. Down eight points in the third quarter, Punahou went on an 18-3 run to seize the lead, and No. 3 ‘Iolani missed two layup tries in the final seconds as the Buffanblu escaped with a 57-56 win at Hemmeter Fieldhouse on Thursday night. The comeback was especially explosive as Jakob Kimura scored 10 of his 23 points during the third quarter. That turned a […]

Jones, Tagovailoa reunite at Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on January 15, 2019

Three years ago, the Kapolei Hurricanes had the best season in school history. The only time Kapolei won 10 games in the same year was punctuated by its only victory ever in the state football tournament, a 33-21 win over ILH runner-up Punahou in the first round of the six-team Open Division state tournament. They did it with a sophomore quarterback and a former head coach in the NFL and college as offensive coordinator. A lot has changed since June […]

Q&A: Kamehameha boys hoops coach Larry Park

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2019

When the Kamehameha Warriors hired Larry Park in the offseason to become their boys varsity head coach, old-timers and former Warriors were among the few who knew the name. Park coached under legendary James Winchester in the 1990s, part of a coaching tree that includes former Kamehameha head coaches Jesse Nakanishi and Julian Nakanishi. Winchester’s strategic use of fullcourt defensive pressure was a key to the Warriors’ state championship season in 1992, and when Jesse Nakanishi was head coach later, […]

Maryknoll bumps Punahou out for No. 1 in boys Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 14, 2019

This week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 may be the most convoluted and, to a lesser degree, confusing selection process in a year of tremendous parity. Maryknoll took the reigns for the first time this winter after gathering six out of the 11 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. In all, four teams received at least one top vote, but the Spartans finished with a double-digit margin ahead of No. 2 Punahou. Maryknoll (18-2, 4-1 Interscholastic […]
