Mililani’s Mayu Wise leaves state judo slam on the table

By Jerry Campany on May 1, 2019

For all the great female judoka who will be competing in the Atlas Insurance Agency/HHSAA Judo State Championships on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center, a lot of minds will be on a girl who will not be on the mat. Mililani senior Mayu Wise has won three straight state titles, the only girl from her school to do so. She was expected to go for the slam this year, the first girl to do so since Bree Rapoza of […]

Saint Louis junior JT Navyac has some swagger at shortstop

By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2019

Saint Louis’ JT Navyac has some serious shortstop skills and they were on display Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to Kamehameha at Hans L’Orange Park. It’s no wonder the kid — only a junior — committed to Cal State Fullerton about a year and a half ago. Here’s some of what he did Tuesday: >> Tracked down a ground ball deep into the hole and threw out a runner by a step in the third. >> Tracked down a hard […]

Kamehameha wrestling coaches add more awards

By Jerry Campany on April 30, 2019

Kamehameha wrestling coaches Rob Hesia and Fallyn Kapoi were named Hawaii’s top girls coaches by the national wrestling organization recently. It is the first year the award has been given out. Hesia, the Kamehameha head coach, and Kamehameha-Hawaii assistant Keith Laeha were voted the region’s best boys coaches, the first time in the organization’s history that the top coaches in the region came from Hawaii. They are now eligible for sectional awards. The Warriors swept boys and girls state championships […]

Q&A: New Saint Louis hoops coach Dan Hale

By Paul Honda on April 30, 2019

Dan Hale isn’t necessarily trying to raise the Saint Louis Crusaders to new heights. The newly-hired basketball coach recalls an era when the men of Kalaepohaku were among the best on the hardwood. “My memory of Saint Louis is they were a powerhouse in basketball. Mark Rodrigues, Brad Pineau, a bunch of guys,” Hale said on Monday afternoon by phone from Virginia. Rodrigues was a standout point guard who went on to lead the floor at Chaminade, beating No. 1 […]

Moanalua’s Noah Wusstig, Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett pile up the hardware

By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2019

Two Hawaii athletes are rising in the ranks of the most accomplished in the “combat” sports of wrestling and judo. Moanalua’s Noah Wusstig and Leilehua’s Kelani Corbett are already among those who have numerous state titles in both or either of the sports and can add to their haul of hardware in the upcoming Atlas Insurance Agency/HHSAA Judo State Championships, which will be held May 4 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Wusstig, who captured a third OIA judo championship last […]

Kamehameha water polo rights itself in HHSAA first round

By Brian McInnis on April 30, 2019

The last time the Kamehameha girls water polo team saw official action, it was a 12-6 loss to Punahou for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship. If the Warriors are to make it five straight finals appearances in this week’s Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships, and threaten their first state title since 2006, they’ll have to shake off whatever disappointment remains from that game — and every other loss to the dynastic Buffanblu over the last decade-plus. […]

STATE SOFTBALL RANKINGS: No. 5 Maryknoll opens state tourney

By Billy Hull on April 29, 2019

The Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships begin in less than 48 hours with No. 5 Maryknoll getting it started. The Spartans, who finished in third place in the ILH and clinched the league’s final berth with a win over Kamehameha last Tuesday, were the only team to move up in the Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 this week, jumping to No. 5. Six of the top 10 teams will be in action on the first day at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium with […]

Shea Suzumoto’s defense sparks Punahou over Castle in state tourney

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2019

Ask Rick Tune about excellence in the back row, and the names Shea Suzumoto and Davis Lau pour forth. They provide the foundation of Punahou’s defense, and that was apparent in a 25-9, 25-15, 25-19 sweep of Castle on Monday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. After winning seven state championships in a row, Punahou entered this year’s New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships unseeded after finishing second in the ILH. Yet, they’ve got plenty of talent across the board. On […]
