There are very few tournaments in girls basketball that surpass the ‘Iolani Classic. Coach Bobbie Awa opted for the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, where Konawaena held its own last week. The Wildcats, led by Kaliana Salazar-Harrell and Braelyn Kauhi, won their first two games. On Saturday, they defeated Jserra (Calif.) 32-25 and Highlands Ranch (Colo.) 48-40 on Monday. The enormous spike in COVID-19 cases in Hawaii is making a big impact on prep basketball. The Punahou Invitational has cancelled opening-round games scheduled for Monday. Buffanblu coach Darren Matsuda said he will meet with school administrators to consider options for the remainder of the tournament. Several teams have players in health and safety protocols. Training went off the charts when Jannealyn Aquino decided to compete in The College Combine in New Jersey last August. She traveled with three Radford teammates and coach Bo Frank. The preparation was there thanks to year-round training with the All-Stars club team, but the combine included a 50-yard dash, vertical leap and push-ups. Kana Loa Kaluna had a choice. He could have followed older brother Kaulana, who had a superb football career at Kaimuki under then-coach David Tautofi. Kana Loa’s dream, though, was elsewhere.
