Girls Hoopbook: Konawaena goes 2-2 at Nike Tournament of Champions

The Konawaena Wildcats returned from the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona with two wins and two defeats. There are very few tournaments in girls basketball that surpass the ‘Iolani Classic.

Coach Bobbie Awa opted for the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona, where Konawaena held its own last week. The Wildcats, led by Kaliana Salazar-Harrell and Braelyn Kauhi, won their first two games. On Saturday, they defeated Jserra (Calif.) 32-25 and Highlands Ranch (Colo.) 48-40 on Monday.

On Tuesday, they fell to California powerhouse St. Ignatius, 53-40. St. Ignatius, out of San Francisco, is ranked No. 10 in the state by MaxPreps, ahead of No. 14 Archbishop Mitty, which won this year’s ‘Iolani Classic.

Konawaena lost to Desert Vista (Ariz.), 40-36, to close out the TOC. Salazar-Harrell sat out with an illness.

“They played well considering these were their first games,” Awa said. “We played some good teams and had a lot of fun. Good team bonding.”

The Wildcats shared first place with ‘Iolani in the first Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 last week. The Raiders were idle after calling off a game at Sacred Hearts.

Meanwhile, the Oahu Interscholastic Association began regular-season play on Thursday. Low turnouts have led to forfeitures, three in all, as the West and East divisions tipped off. Castle forfeited to Roosevelt, Kaimuki forfeited to Moanalua and Waialua forfeited to Campbell. Anuenue was scheduled to play at Kahuku.

Notable: Leilehua, which lost to Kahuku in preseason play 39-31, went to Radford and lost 44-29.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu begins regular-season play on Monday with a Division II game, Punahou I-AA at Sacred Hearts. ILH D-III starts on Thursday.

The ILH’s D-I slate begins with Punahou at Maryknoll on Jan. 4. With just four teams in that schedule, there will be multiple round-robin merriness.

Maui’s opening statement

The Sabers returned from Oahu last week after a loss at Kamehameha and a win over a depleted Maryknoll squad. Three days after beating Maryknoll, No. 8 Maui made the trek to fourth-ranked Lahainaluna and rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit for a 67-62 win.

They followed that with a 70-23 home win over Baldwin on Thursday. Maui is now 3-0 in MIL play. Kayla Thornton had 23 points and eight steals in the win at Lahainaluna. She also had 20 points against Baldwin.

Also on Thursday, Taylor Eldredge scored 24 points and Ledjan Pahukoa had 20 points against her former team as the Lady Lunas routed King Kekaulike, 69-22.

In the 2019-20 season, Pahukoa and her two two sisters were key contributors as King Kekaulike qualified for one of the MIL’s two spots in the D-I state tournament. Now that Maui is established with new coach Vic Aguirre and a trail of his club standouts, it appears to be a two-horse race between the Sabers and the Lunas for the MIL D-I title.

Yes it was well worth it.
Everybody will get Covid sooner or later!
@Really, you can hide in your Bubble but these girls choose to live life to the fullest & the rest of the world should do the same; Get vaccinated and live life!

I agree let nature takes its course. Can’t hide forever

If they they were unaware? that would be terrible parenting & coaching! But it sounds like you are unaware.
If they truly regret going on that trip then they should just quit basketball & doing normal things in life because Covid is here to stay.
I’m vaccinated and I live life knowing I can still get Covid but I’m not afraid of dying like the unvaccinated people.
It is still their choice to get the shot or not.
I suggest you wear your mask, shield, NASA body suit & stay in your own bubble, while the world moves forward. Good luck to you & your fight against the NEW flu!
P.S. don’t take the shot because you’re the same person that probably thinks it will kill you too!
