‘Iolani nudges past Konawaena for No. 1 ranking in Girls Basketball Top 10

After sharing the No. 1 spot with Konawaena, ‘Iolani is an outright top team in the past five Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 polls. Front, from left: Keiki McGee, Haylie-Anne Ohta, Paige Oh, Keely Kai, Abby Tanaka. Back: Kanoe Hanohano, Mele Sake, Jovi Lefotu, Callie Pieper, Jaety Mandaquit.

‘Iolani took a break, Konawaena made a trek to the desert, and now the two are no longer joined at the top of the rankings.

‘Iolani (3-2, 0-0 ILH) collected eight of the 10 first-place votes to reclaim sole possession of the top ranking in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. Konawaena, which was 2-2 in the Nike Tournament of Champions last week, has the other two first-place votes.

One of ‘Iolani’s losses was to ‘Iolani Classic champion Archbishop Mitty, 62-52. Mitty is currently ranked No. 14 in MaxPreps’ California state rankings. After winning two games at the TOC, Konawaena lost to St. Ignatius, 53-40. St. Ignatius is ranked No. 10 in the same MaxPreps California rankings.

Despite a torrent of injuries, Maryknoll (5-2) remains at No. 3. Punahou leaped over Kamehameha to the No. 4 spot. Maui, Lahainaluna, Waiakea, Kahuku and Hilo round out the Top 10.

    Don’t sleep on Kaiser. They could make a run🤔

    Maryknoll wtf they were thinking hiring a guy that can barely move. The kids will never have respect and bust there butts for him. The team is only as weak as it’s leader.

    What’s the definition of the best coach in Hawaii? One that wins titles ? Develop players ? Win with average talent ?

  3. Fullcourt December 28, 2021 7:06 pm

    @ really,
    Some good points

  4. Fullcourt December 28, 2021 7:45 pm

    I’ve seen some not so good coaches look like really good coaches because of some talented rosters .the one thing with girls basketball is if you have a very good player you can go far

    @really,
    How does proformance gets all these kids to play with them ? I’ve seen kids from Maui and big island playing with them . Lot of good players get developed by coaches who has put in thousands of hours with kids and then these kids leave or other clubs poach as they get older for greener pastures . Well, they eventually find out it’s not greener . It’s to bad that club ball has turned into dog eat dog mentality

    I’m not even into girls BB that much but I loved this comment thread!

    @really, I think this website should hire you to be the writer for girls basketball stories. You obviously know way more than the people who write the main articles on the top. Keep it going! I hope you can do the same for boys basketball too.

    @ papaya My thoughts exactly. @really. Curious your thoughts on the boys basketball season.

    Must be personal for you to say all those things about proformance. For all I know Coach Derrick, Coach Kyle, Coach Jay is awesome coaches and hard to beat with the style they bring. I would trust them with my teenage daughter any day.

    All this bad about proformance but What about the coach from city high? Isn’t he a sex offender? He’s the worse and shouldn’t ever coach again. Smfh

    Who cares if 2 out of 3 teams lose locally. The parents and adults takes wins and losses more serious than the kids. Trust me just because you have a better record doesn’t make you a better coach.

    If you as a parent thinks that a coach can turn your kid into a superstar than you must be crazy. Parents gotta put in just as much work with the kids and stay disciplined, consistent, and hold your kid accountable for every mistake.

    And tell me why settle outside of court? If I was truly innocent of those sexual allegations I would fight till the day I die to prove my innocence. That’s the scum of this earth being labeled as a SEXUAL PREDATOR.

    You feel me homie

    First of all you sound silly trying to justify that CHILD MOLESTOR. What’s wrong with you?

    Punahou should be ashamed of themselves for trying to cover it up like nothing ever happened.

    I understand years went by and it took a lot of guts and bravery for those innocent girls to come out. Only reason it resurfaced is because ilima saw that her molestor was still coaching and felt the need to speak up to prevent it from happening again. Which were so thankful for🙏🏼. And then boom more innocent people gained courage and shared there similar story.

    Every family different. They may have took the money but it won’t change the fact of what happened and how it affected there life. They all could of got a million bucks for all i care but it still doesn’t prove his innocence.

    And what Bill Cosby must be innocent to.

    @Really
    You must REALLY have nothing better to do but come on here and talk about teenage girls! So shame! These high school athletes come on here excited to read articles about games, but instead they have to read your silly comments! As for Proformance and Coach Kyle they don’t need to “poach” players! They have players seeking them because they have credibility obviously something YOU don’t have. GROW UP these teenagers have more class than you. SMH.
