COUNTDOWN: No. 1 Saint Louis’ defense begins up front with Stanley Mckenzie

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2019

Everything is up front for the Saint Louis Crusaders. Or, it begins there. When Cal Lee returned to the campus four years ago, the program had talent across the board. The one area lacking depth was defensive line. The Crusaders reached the state final that season, losing to Kahuku. In 2017, they stocked up at D-line with a horde of talent led by eventual All-State defensive player of the year Faatui Tuitele and All-State performer Gino Quinones. That’s when a […]

Hawaii’s best athletes on the gridiron continue to be recognized as among the best in the nation, as class of 2021 prospects Wynden Ho’ohuli and Mason Tufaga were named in the initial ESPN Junior 300 released Wednesday. Ho’ohuli, who recently transferred from Saint Louis to Mililani, is ranked as the third-best inside linebacker in the nation and 144th best player overall. Tufaga, who figures to see an increased role on the Crusaders’ defense this year, is ranked 159th overall and […]

COUNTDOWN: LB Legend Matautia ready for double duty for No. 2 Punahou

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2019

The state’s elite football programs have rarely felt the need to utilize players on both sides of the ball. When it happens, though, the results have often been outstanding. Kahuku used safety Kawe Johnson as an option quarterback and kick returner en route to a state title. Punahou didn’t hesitate to employ linebacker Manti Te‘o as a running back during a championship run. While Saint Louis has kept it simple during its current run of three state championships, contender Punahou, […]

By Paul Honda on July 31, 2019

Caiyle Kaupu prefers a quiet, happy life. Too bad for her, the world is finding out that her journey will take her to a new place next summer. The Konawaena senior-to-be gave a oral commitment to play basketball at UC Irvine on Tuesday. “I’m happy that my education is going to be paid for. I’m not sure yet (about a major), but when I get done, at least I’ll have a degree,” she said on Wednesday. Kaupu is a two-time […]

GLORY DAYS: Coach Joe Wong and the 2019 Kailua Surfriders

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2019

27th IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

COUNTDOWN: Tyrese Tafai nears return, won’t have to shoulder load for No. 3 Campbell

By Paul Honda on July 31, 2019

As a sophomore, Tyrese Tafai was a rising star on the gridiron. The high-energy linebacker seemed to be everywhere making plays for the Campbell Sabers. In the trenches, sideline to sideline, chasing foes in the backfield, down the field. Fundamentally, he was a new breed of tackler, trained to use his shoulders, to get low and use leverage. No one knew he would become sidelined for much of the next two seasons with a shoulder injury. Tafai finally went in […]
