RANKINGS: Punahou and Kamehameha tied at the top

They’ve split their two regular-season matches and now they’re split at the top of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. Kamehameha and Punahou each received five first-place votes and are tied for No. 1 in the latest rankings released today. HAWAII GROWN: Hawaii also represented well in D-I soccer

More than 50 Hawaii high school graduates are currently listed on mainland Division I women’s soccer rosters with 10 men’s soccer players from Hawaii representing seven different Division I schools. In the latest women’s soccer rankings by Top Draw Soccer, No. 7 Washington State jumped two spots after beating Oregon State 2-1 on Saturday in its Pac-12 opener. Defense, senior leadership and mature underclassmen are all key ingredients for No. 2-ranked Punahou, which outlasted No. 5 Campbell 31-21 on Saturday night. Senior running back Vincent Terrell rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns, sophomore defensive end Tevarua Tafiti returned a fumble 70 yards for a TD, and freshman quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele added another learning-on-the-job experience.

The senior running back bolted loose for 189 yards and two touchdowns as No. 2 Punahou overcame No. 5 Campbell 31-21 on Saturday night, spoiling the Sabers’ homecoming night. Tevarua Tafiti knows, even though he is just a sophomore, that he belongs. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound defensive end came up with possibly the biggest play of his young career on Saturday, returning a fumble 70 yards to paydirt as No. 2 Punahou outlasted No. 5 Campbell 31-21 at the Sabers’ field. “Your grade doesn’t matter in this league.
