RANKINGS: State tournament begins without No. 2 team in state

The New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships begin today with four first-round games in Division I. Division II play begins Wednesday with the quarterfinals in both divisions on Thursday. Kapaa and Lahainaluna clinch league titles and state berths

Kapaa and Lahainaluna are the latest Hawaii high school football teams to clinch league championships. The Warriors defeated Waimea 31-19 at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday for the KIF title to improve to 6-1. It’s Kapaa’s second league championship in a row and sixth since 2011. ILH champion Damien is the top seed in Division II in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships beginning Wednesday. The Monarchs will try to give the ILH its fifth consecutive state title in D-II girls volleyball. Alabama junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa underwent surgery today on his injured ankle suffered in Saturday’s 35-13 win over Tennessee. The 2017 Saint Louis alumnus and Heisman Trophy finalist from a year ago was hurt on a sack from behind in the second quarter. He suffered a high-ankle sprain and did not return to the game.
