New Maui football coach Robert Dougherty knows turnarounds

By Nick Abramo on December 6, 2019

New Maui High football coach Robert Dougherty has been part of a major turnaround before. He’ll be hoping to do that turnaround thing again as the Sabers coach. He was introduced as the new head man last week by athletic director Michael Ban. Dougherty played quarterback for Boston University in the 1990s, helping a team that went 3-8 in 1992 and picked to finish 11th out of 12 conference teams in 1993 to a Yankee Conference championship and a 12-1 […]

Cal Lee: Saint Louis’ GEICO bowl game is a ‘tremendous honor’

By Nick Abramo on December 5, 2019

Cal Lee wasn’t feeling well for a little while before the state Open Division championship game on Nov. 29. He missed the news conference three days before Saint Louis’ 45-6 victory over Kahuku. He was also not in attendance when linebacker Jordan Botelho was presented his U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey at the school three days after the title game. Maybe Lee was still fighting the bug. Or maybe he went into just a little bit of a hiding period […]

By Nick Abramo on December 5, 2019

Garret Tihada said it last year and Dean Rickard repeated it Thursday. When fans criticize the Lahainaluna Lunas for not moving up from Division II to Division I, those coaches have an answer. Rickard, a co-head coach of the four-time defending D-II state football champion Lunas along with Bobby Watson this year, confirmed that the team’s stance has not changed. “We as coaches all agree that if the MIL sent an overall champion to the D-I state tournament and the […]

Balance, experience, depth make Radford tough to beat in West

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2019

There’s much work to do in the eyes of Coach Charles Chong, but the Lady Rams of Radford showed plenty of reasons why the OIA West is theirs for the taking. Kailani Tenorio scored nine points as Radford used an unselfish passing game and tenacious defense to stifle Kapolei 45-25 in the regular-season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at James Alegre Gymnasium. Angel Asaah scored six points and hustled for eight rebounds, and Angela Howell and Ashlynn McGarrah […]

‘Iolani, Konawaena, Kamehameha head the pack, but ILH D-II rising

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2019

Fluid and fast. The girls basketball preseason is flying by. Finding nice, new gems is a hobby itself for hoop fans. Example: KVIKS TV. Apparently, Hilo High School is way ahead of the pack when it comes to media in the BIIF. Games are streamed live, as well as other announcements and events at the historic institution. I still haven’t been in their “new” gym. Back in the day, when I came over from the west side, Hilo’s boys games […]

With bowl win, Saint Louis can be the fourth GEICO series team to finish season undefeated

By Nick Abramo on December 4, 2019

The GEICO State Champions Bowl Series that the Saint Louis Crusaders will be playing in on either Dec. 20 or 21 in Las Vegas has been around since 2014. No games, however, were held in 2015. The series has been held consecutively since 2016, with games occurring in four different states. With games in Nevada this year, that will make five states. The series has consistently tried — and mostly succeeded — in getting highly ranked national and state teams. […]
