It’s Mililani vs. Moanalua for OIA supremacy Saturday night

By Nick Abramo on January 24, 2020

Mililani girls soccer coach Darren Smith looks calm most of the time. It appears that’s his natural state. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a competitive fire burning in his soul. Talk to anybody who watched him play for the Mililani boys team in the early 2000s and they know. He’s a leader and he’s strategic. He’s smiling. But … he’s out to win. In his first year as the girls’ head coach, Smith’s got the Trojans (11-1) into […]

Angel Asaah’s rough night has a heavenly finish for Radford in win over Nanakuli

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2020

Sometimes the 1-3-1 zone can look like a Rubik’s cube. Other times, it unlocks and great shooters cash in. Earlier in the week, Punahou’s Ryder Hsiung was on the receiving end of perfect passes by his teammates and the result was 6-for-6 shooting from the arc for 22 first-half points in No. 3 Punahou’s 59-49 win over No. 7 Saint Louis. On Thursday, Radford’s girls weren’t so opportunistic, shooting just 3-for-14 from 3-point range against a similar 1-3-1 look in […]

HAWAII GROWN: San Jose State’s Fieme’a Hafoka finally enjoying success on the court

By Billy Hull on January 21, 2020

No San Jose State women’s basketball player has logged more minutes since the start of the 2016 season than senior Fieme’a Hafoka. The 2016 Lahainaluna alumna has had to endure a lot of losses — 68 to be exact over her first three years. For someone coming from a high school that went more than a decade without losing a game in Maui Interscholastic League play, it was difficult to deal with. “It was tough physically, mentally and emotionally,” the 2016 […]

Mililani’s Liam McGehee, who is soaring in soccer, once tackled football

By Nick Abramo on January 20, 2020

Liam McGehee‘s progression as an athlete will continue next fall when he attends Whitworth University (Spokane, Wash.) to play soccer. For all we know, McGehee’s “American” football career is done. The senior center midfielder for the Mililani Trojans (7-1-1) in soccer spent his falls as a sophomore and junior playing for the school’s football team as a place-kicker. This school year, McGehee decided to concentrate on soccer by opting off of the football team in the fall (even though he […]
