Saint Louis’ 6-5, 350-pound OL Kalan Ellis gets first offer from Hawaii

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2020

Kalan Ellis is a tough guy to miss. Basketball court. Football field. The 6-foot-5, 350-pound Saint Louis offensive lineman wasn’t hard for Hawaii to find. The Warriors took a close look and made him a scholarship offer recently. Offensive line coach Sam Bennett made the connection. “Coach Bennett called me up. They were really interested in my film. Next thing you know, they offered me. It was within a day. They were really impressed. They like my size and my […]

Transgender policy in Hawaii high school sports is being challenged

By Nick Abramo on March 8, 2020

Cynthia Monteleone is on a quest to educate people on what she perceives as unfairness in Hawaii high school athletics. Monteleone, a track and field coach at Lahainaluna and a world champion age group runner (40-44) in the 400 meters, sent a complaint to the Department of Education’s civil rights office last week. In the complaint, she states that allowing male to female transgender athletes to compete in girls sports is unfair and a violation of Title IX, which prohibits […]

Little-known Zion Kese explodes in Senior Classic with 17 points, memorable dunk

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2020

If you’ve never heard of Peniel Educational Ministries before, you aren’t the first. Zion Kese has spent countless time explaining the school he attends. He is also patient when he’s asked how to spell Peniel. “It’s like pen, which you write with, and ‘iel’. It’s just a small Christian school in Pearl City,” he said. Kese put his school on the basketball map on Saturday with a resounding performance at the Hawaii Senior Classic in Moanalua gym. The 6-foot-2 wing […]

Kamehameha’s Kalia Kalua beats out King Kekaulike’s Teani Arakawa for player of the year honors

By Nick Abramo on March 8, 2020

Kamehameha senior Kalia Kalua, a fast and quick-striking forward, was picked as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Player of the Year in girls soccer. Right behind in the voting by coaches and media around the state was smooth and dynamic midfielder Teani Arakawa of King Kekaulike. Kalua led her team to the Division I state championship, and the team was loaded. Three other Warriors made the first team on the Stellar Eleven. For a story on the All-State team and a full […]

Elijah McGruder’s MVP night sparks OIA in huge comeback win over ILH

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2020

There are a multitude of great plot lines following the OIA/public schools’ 94-87 comeback win over the ILH/private schools in the Hawaii Senior Classic on Saturday at Moanalua. The most surprising, though, is Elijah McGruder. Moanalua’s blue-collar banger was never the tallest or biggest, but he was often very effective in the paint as his team won the OIA title. But that was as a classic role player. On Saturday, McGruder exploded for 21 points and 10 rebounds, scoring 17 […]

Kamehameha’s Malie Marfil named MVP in ILH rout of OIA

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2020

Sometimes, there’s something simply marvelous about Malie Marfil’s game. The Kamehameha senior had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists without a single turnover, adding a block and a steal as the ILH squad ran the OIA team off the floor in a 92-63 rout in the Hawaii Senior Classic hosted by Geremy Robinson. A crowd of about 300 at Moanalua High School saw the private-school unit, coached by ‘Iolani’s Dean Young, turn a 38-31 halftime lead into a straight […]

Waianae’s Alohilani Napalapalai strikes out 17 batters in home win

By Nick Abramo on March 7, 2020

Some pitchers are so locked in, they have no time to think about esoteric things like how many strikeouts they had. Just getting outs is all that matters. That’s why Waianae junior Alohilani Napalapalai said “nine” when asked how many strikeouts she thought she had after Saturday’s 4-3 home win over Kapolei Charter. Try again. “Ten?” she guessed. Obviously, art is more important to her — such as how she painted the corners — than the math of the 17 strikeouts […]

Kapolei Charter School makes eventful first appearance in OIA varsity softball

By Nick Abramo on March 7, 2020

Kapolei Charter School made a bit of history Saturday, playing its first OIA varsity softball game. And for two reasons at both ends of the spectrum, it was a memorable game for the school that opened three years ago. First, the ‘Iwa (Hawaiian frigate bird) held a late lead in the game at Waianae. Second, despite a solid effort, 17 Kapolei Charter girls went down swinging against the hot pitching of Waianae’s Alohilani Napalapalai in a 4-3 loss. Had it […]
