Waipahu’s Greg Adaro and Ricky Guzman had each thrown no-hitters before, but on this date in 1975 they combined on one. Adaro pitched seven innings and Guzman worked the final two to complete a 3-2 win over Campbell at the University of Hawaii field. Adaro walked four batters in the seventh inning before being pulled. On this day in 1956, Harry Kitamura gambled and lost. The Mid-Pacific coach decided to rest pitcher Jerry Ishimoto and call Herb Higashi up from the JV to start. Higashi was roughed up in his varsity debut and Roosevelt beat Mid-Pacific 15-8 in a game that lasted nearly three hours. Charlene Rodenhurst of Kamehameha tied the 50-yard dash mark of 6.4 seconds in the ILH trials at Punahou. The speed queen also had the top time in the 100 with an 11.8 clocking. Two JV records were broken, with Juanah Lok of Roosevelt setting a new standard in the shot put and future star Shirleen Miguel tying the long jump record for the Rough Riders. In only five games, anything can happen. The 1940 Saint Louis Crusaders made sure it didn’t. On this day in 1940, George Rodriguez and Ray Rosa hit home runs and Saint Louis beat Punahou 9-1 to win the ILH title with a perfect record in five games. In 2010 Campbell won its first state softball crown. On this date in 2011, the Sabers added an OIA title to the collection. Kawehi Kahana hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Summer Palipti made it hold up as the Sabers beat Kailua 2-1 to earn their first OIA championship since 1992. APRIL 21, 1970: Public schools make their move

On this day in 1970, Hawaii’s public schools made a plan to even the playing field with their public school counterparts. The Interscholastic Conference of Hawaii was proposed for 1971, bringing all of the islands together under one umbrella. The plan included private schools providing they follow the rules of the organization, namely on recruiting and eligibility.
