By Paul Honda on August 7, 2020

Not one, not two, not three… but 15. Fifteen Friday mornings in a row, the Kaimuki Bulldogs football team and families have shown up to distribute food boxes to the community. “There’s usually three or four guys in a group. In the boxes, there’s laulau, Portuguese sausage, pipikaula,” three-sport senior Koby Moananu said. “A lot of meats,” Tony Stevens added. “I think people just come out, not because they need it, but because maybe other people need it. They give […]

Since 2005, Kamehameha has won 10 Division I girls volleyball state championships under Coach Chris Blake. The only other teams to win state titles during this period also hail from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu: Punahou (three titles) and ‘Iolani (two). On a regular basis, the program at Kamehameha has set a bar so high, starters and reserves alike often proceed with their careers at the college level. From year-round work with their respective club teams, to a carefully crafted […]

Coaches more confident about COVID-19 compliance on campus than off

By Paul Honda on August 6, 2020

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s announcement on Wednesday means football, girls volleyball and competitive cheer will have to wait. Taking precautions to postpone the higher- and moderate-risk fall sports — football, girls volleyball, cross country and competitive cheer — to winter, possibly as early as January, is a big change for coaches across the state. ‘Iolani football coach and co-athletic director Wendell Look cautioned that January is not a lock as a start date because of the nature of […]

Football, girls volleyball and competitive cheer are the sports that will shift to January. Air riflery and bowling will remain in the fall season. Interim football head coach Leonard Lau raring to go at Punahou

By Paul Honda on August 5, 2020

The strangest year of high school athletics could not be more of a mystery for Punahou’s interim head football coach, Leonard Lau. The longtime assistant was the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons as Punahou challenged for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. The Buffanblu were 10-2 last year, losing only to national powerhouse Saint Louis. When the school removed veteran coach and assistant athletic director Kale Ane, at least for the time being, during its investigation into alleged […]

By Paul Honda on August 5, 2020

Aiva Arquette’s week was just about perfect, but landing most valuable player honors at the Hawaii Sandlot Classic is a nice landing. The selection results were announced on Tuesday night. A panel of 14 observers were involved with the selections, Classic organizer Ikaika Du Pont said. The Saint Louis junior-to-be batted .600 (6-for-10) during the three-game event at Hans L’Orange Park with two triples, a double, three RBIs and four runs scored while drawing three walks and a hit by […]

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2020

In March, a dream died for Casey Kitagawa and his teammates at Kamehameha. In late July, a different dream came true. The right-handed pitcher committed to accept a scholarship from Loyola Marymount as senior year nears. “I’m happy. I did not expect this, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited,” Kitagawa said on Saturday night during a phone call from Arizona, where his summer club team is playing in the Wood Bat National Championship. “My mom and dad, well, […]

Kamehameha’s Keola Yim, Paa Elarianoff boost ‘Elima to Hawaii Sandlot Classic title

By Paul Honda on July 31, 2020

After one inning, starting pitchers Tommy Tereschuk and Kahiau Shenck had struck out the side in the championship game of the inaugural Hawaii Sandlot Classic at Hans L’Orange Park. By the time Tereschuk left after 3 2/3 innings, he had seven strikeouts and a 2-1 lead. It didn’t last, however, as Team ‘Elima rode the efficient pitching of Keola Yim and Paa Elarionoff for a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Team ‘Ekahi. The game had a major pivot point in the […]
