Kahuku all-state RB Zealand Matagi decides against transfer to Utah

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2020

Depending on who knows who, there was or was not discussion within the Oahu Interscholastic Association about the most current issue: Would student-athletes be permitted to play one sport in two separate seasons and states in the coming academic year? That was a question for Kahuku running back Zealand Matagi, who had his eyes on Utah powerhouse Skyridge. Former Kamehameha quarterback Kia‘i Keone transferred there in late July and is on the roster. Matagi, a Star-Advertiser All-State selection, decided to […]

Former football coach Kaeo Drummondo returns to Hilo as new AD

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2020

Kaeo Drummondo is a man with many dreams. The dilemma for the highly successful coach was a win-win either way: stay at Kamehameha as an assistant coach, or apply for the athletic director position at Hilo. Drummondo elected to put his name in the hat, and now, he succeeds Kurt Kawachi as the Vikings AD. “If somebody told me this 12 months ago, I’d say, no way. It’s totally unexpected. When opportunity knocks, you’ve got to answer,” Drummondo said. In […]

Coveted by Hawaii, UNLV, ‘Cuse, ASU: Crusaders loaded at O-line

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2020

There is no perfection in the earthly domain of football, but Rob Crowell is seeing something close to it with the Saint Louis offensive line. Since the start of calendar year of 2020, arguably the most chaotic in history, the opportunities for three returning starters in the trenches continue to grow. Left tackle Kalan Ellis committed to Syracuse two weeks ago. Right guard Jonah Savaiinaea added to his offer list recently with Arizona State and Syracuse. Right tackle La‘akea Kapoi […]

Kahuku standout Zion Ah You resists temptation to transfer, stays home

By Paul Honda on August 12, 2020

In the end, Zion Ah You wouldn’t surrender his chance for one last season as a Kahuku Red Raider. The Star-Advertiser All-State defensive lineman could have taken a route to Utah this fall while Hawaii high school football goes dormant. Utah powerhouse Orem, which won the 5A state title last year, is home to some of Ah You’s relatives. The Tigers have won three state crowns in a row, but he thought better of it. “No way. Only if they […]

Syracuse joins chase for Saint Louis OL Jonah Savaiinaea

By Paul Honda on August 11, 2020

For months, the path to success at Syracuse appeared to veer through the Hawaiian Islands. That observation rang truer still after the Orange recently offered a football scholarship to Saint Louis offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea, who just completed his sophomore season. The 6-foot-4, 345-pound right guard also has offers from Hawaii, UNLV and Arizona State. “(Offensive line coach) Kevin Mawae of ASU and Cav (Mike Cavanaugh of Syracuse) reached out a few times,” Crusaders OL coach Rob Crowell said. “Because […]

Former ‘Iolani RB Ka‘ua Nishigaya relishes new opportunity

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2020

On Thursday, Ka‘ua Nishigaya’s life will change. He will board a red-eye flight for the West Coast. After two more connecting flights and a 90-minute drive, Nishigaya will set his feet on the firm terrain of Yankton, S.D. It was Yankton that was once the jewel of the Dakota Territory, which encompassed both Dakota states and Wyoming. Mount Mary University is a gem in the town of 15,000. Nishigaya, once a bulldozing running back and wrestler at ‘Iolani, is joining […]

Penn makes it 7 D-I offers for Punahou WR Christopher Paige

By Paul Honda on August 9, 2020

When one Ivy League team steps up, the others take notice. Christopher Paige is noticed, all right. Penn became the second Ivy school to make a football offer to the Punahou wide receiver. The quest by Penn came just six days after Columbia opened up a potential roster spot for Paige. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior-to-be now has seven FBS/FCS schools in pursuit of his talent. His other offers are from Air Force, Army, Columbia, Navy, Northern Colorado and Valparaiso. Punahou […]

Here today, gone to Utah: Kamehameha QB Kia‘i Keone’s new journey

By Paul Honda on August 9, 2020

For three years, Kia‘i Keone was a Kamehameha Warrior. Varsity football. Junior varsity basketball. As of mid-July, he was still a Warrior. Today, he is in Lehi, Utah, playing quarterback for Skyridge High School. The senior recently joined the team after making the move in late July. When video footage from a Falcons intrasquad game surfaced on social media Sunday morning, there was Keone, rolling out of the pocket under duress to make a deep throw near the sideline for a […]
