Kalihi community mourns loss of Farrington, Disciples coach Willie Talamoa

There has been an outpouring of love for former Farrington assistant football coach Willie Talamoa. Talamoa, 36, was working as a guest services assistant at the Institute of Human Services when he died from the COVID-19 virus. Within an hour of getting an oral commit from Punahou defensive back Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen, Rebels assistant coach Chad Kauhaahaa made a scholarship offer to Roosevelt defensive end Kaeo Akana. After 17 football scholarship offers, Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen of Punahou decided the time had come. Early Friday morning, the senior defensive back selected UNLV as his future football home. HHSAA extends no-contact date for coaches, players to Sept. 13

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has extended the no-contact rule for prep coaches and players to Sept. 13. The extension was expected as COVID-19 cases increased in the islands. The rule is being applied to all sports. Traditional fall sports football, cross country, girls volleyball and competitive cheer were postponed to January at the earliest.
