Medeiros shines in Perfect Game All-American Classic

By Billy Hull on August 13, 2013

Think you’ve had a good summer? Waiakea senior Kodi Medeiros probably has you beat. Medeiros, a left-handed pitcher who Oahu fans got to see as a sophomore in the 2012 state tournament at Les Murakami Stadium, pitched in the Perfect Game All-American Classic on Sunday, striking out two in an inning of work. Perfect Game invited its top 51 high school prospects in the country to play at Petco Park in San Diego and Medeiros said he’s the first person […]

Mira Costa back in Kang field

By Jerry Campany on August 11, 2013

Last year, Punahou went undefeated in the Ann Kang tournament to begin the season and used that momentum to capture the state crown against Kamehameha. The Buffanblu are in the tournament again beginning Thursday at ‘Iolani, but they might have a tougher time repeating. Mira Costa, which has won the tournament five times since it began in 1989, is in the field for the first time since 2010 and has been lumped in Punahou’s pool for Thursday. The teams play […]

Radford in a league of its own

By Jerry Campany on August 11, 2013

After the first week of high school football, it appears that Radford is easily the best of a bad lot. The OIA White went 1-8 in the first week of the season, and a lot of the cross-league games were not even close. The teams in the lower division gave up an average of 33 points over the weekend, and that is counting two points for Roosevelt’s forfeit to McKinley. The hardest hit were Nanakuli with 56 points to Kapaa, […]

Kalani ready to build on 2012

By Billy Hull on August 11, 2013

After one quarter in the nightcap of the 50th Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night, the 2013 Kalani Falcons looked like the Falcons of old. No, not the teams that won three games in 2011 or four games in 2012, but the ones that went 2-80 from 2001 to 2010. By the time the final whistle sounded, that clearly wasn’t the case, as these Falcons battled back to erase a 44-6 deficit, going on a 30-0 run […]

Castle’s new turf put to good use

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2013

It was the perfect night to show off the capabilities of Castle High School’s new football field. Heavy rain pounded the new turf for most of Friday night’s preseason game against No. 5 Kamehameha. The Warriors eventually shook off the foul football weather to win 15-0. While players from both teams committed several fumbles that could be attributed to the slick ball, the field held up with minimal pooling. Castle went without home games last season as part of the […]

Kennedy Who? Waianae’s defense just fine

By Jerry Campany on August 10, 2013

Early in camp, Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto was among the first to point out that one player is not going to be able replace Kennedy Tulimasealii. How about a whole corps of them? The Seariders sacked Farrington quarterback Montana Liana six times and pressured him many more in a 33-16 win over the Governors at Raymond Torii Field on Friday night. Nayton Kuresa led the way with two bags, followed by Senio Samisoni and Kalalena Mauga with one each. Shayne-Lopaka […]

Kaiser closes gap, still has work to do

By Billy Hull on August 9, 2013

It’s no secret Rich Miano wanted his Kaiser football team playing in the OIA Red conference this year. Friday night, the Cougars played their only game of the season against an OIA Red opponent before opening play in the OIA White division next Saturday against Kalani. Kaiser’s defense, with a trio of impressive linebackers in senior Fitou Fisiiahi (6-0, 235), sophomore Parker Higgins (5-10, 199) and freshman Isaac Slade-Matautia (6-1, 185), held its own against a Campbell team that might […]

‘Iolani to honor 1950-1951 Triple Crown champs at Father Bray game

By Billy Hull on August 9, 2013

The 50th anniversary of ‘Iolani’s Father Bray Classic is Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, featuring the Raiders hosting Kalani in the nightcap. Pac-Five will kick things off against Radford. ‘Iolani will celebrate its triple crown of champions in 1950 and 1951, when the Raiders, under coach Father Bray, won ILH titles in football, basketball and baseball in the same season. Football was the toughest championship to win, as ‘Iolani started the season with a 7-2 loss to Farrington. Two games […]
