Saint Louis climbs back on top

By Dave Reardon on August 20, 2013

Before Saint Louis took on Kahuku on Saturday, many observers considered it a stretch to believe the Crusaders could pull off an upset of the two-time defending state champions. I was among them, fairly firm among the consensus pegging the Red Raiders as preseason No. 1 and not fully convinced the Crusaders had gotten past last year’s disappointing 5-5 campaign. Yes, beating Kahuku would be a stretch. But that’s exactly what multi-weaponed Saint Louis did on offense in winning 45-24 […]

Leilehua wins a battle of up-tempo offenses

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 17, 2013

For a while, the tempo in Saturday’s matchup between Leilehua and ‘Iolani rivaled that of the just-completed NCAA Summer League basketball at Manoa Gym. The fast-break styles of both teams produced a combined 91 points and 828 yards of total offense, and ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look summed up Leilehua’s 56-35 season-opening win with an extension of the hoops analogy. “They got a couple breakaways and dunked on our head,” he said. Leilehua scored three touchdowns on plays of more than […]

Sua-Godinet key to Kamehameha’s title hopes

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2013

Kamehameha coach Doug Cosbie doesn’t have a lot to worry about defensively. Two games into his first season as Warriors head coach, Cosbie has watched his talented unit give up a total of three points in wins over Castle and Farrington. First-string running back Kaulana Apelu suffered an injury against the Knights, but after seeing the sixth-ranked Warriors beat up on No. 9 Farrington 38-3 on Friday night, running back depth isn’t a concern. Seniors Brandon Kahookele and Kainoa Simao […]

Waipahu’s youngsters get their shot

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 16, 2013

With two first-time starters leading the offense, Waipahu’s defense gave the youngsters a chance to settle into the Marauders’ season opener on Friday night. Academic probation left Waipahu without its regular starters in the backfield, and sophomore quarterback Gavin Marques and running back Matthew Leilua combined for 227 rushing yards, with Marques adding two touchdown passes in his varsity debut in the Marauders’ 19-14 win Friday night. Five lost fumbles, three in the first half, hampered Waipahu’s offense. But the […]

McKinley Tigers feature one wild cat

By Jerry Campany on August 16, 2013

The excitement is back in McKinley. It might not add up to more wins, but it makes every minute the Tigers are on offense a chance to see something special. Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper took over for Marcus Aikau in the second half of Friday night’s loss to Kapolei. He led the team to its only score and had the Hurricanes wondering what is coming next. He is a one-man wildcat offense, whether he means to be or not. Kalahiki-Gasper started last […]

Trench warfare: Uluave vs. Padello

By Jerry Campany on August 16, 2013

Thursday night’s battle between Punahou and Mililani was waged on many fronts. One of the most important featured Punahou’s left tackle trying to contain Mililani defensive end Kelii Padello. It was very much a heavyweight title fight, so let’s treat it as such. In one corner, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 310 pounds, Punahou junior Semisi Uluave. In the other corner, Mililani’s Padello (5-11, 200). Let’s get ready to rumble! Round 1 Padello hit the field for Punahou’s first offensive series […]

Mariota 5th in first ESPN Heisman poll

By Billy Hull on August 15, 2013

Former Saint Louis School and current Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota was ranked fifth in the first ESPN Heisman Watch poll released on Thursday. Mariota received two first-place votes among the 16 voters and is the fourth quarterback on the list, trailing Ohio State’s Braxton Miller, reigning Heisman winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Alabama’s AJ McCarron. South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney tops the list. Mariota should have plenty of opportunities to roll up big numbers early in […]
