Kahuku’s Williams leads Class of 2014

By Billy Hull on August 26, 2013

Scout.com has updated its list of the top 15 high school football recruits for the Class of 2014 from Hawaii. Leading the way is uncommitted Kahuku defensive end Lamone Williams, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds. Six of the next seven listed are thought to be committed to the University of Hawaii, although that could change for a couple of recruits, most notably Kaiser linebacker Fitou Fisiiahi. The only player in the top 15 headed to the mainland […]

Mililani ready to roll over weak West

By Jerry Campany on August 26, 2013

Val Crabbe’s Mililani girls volleyball team was a pretty busy bunch in the preseason, but the coach had little choice. It may have been Mililani’s only chance to see quality competition before the OIA playoffs. Mililani will open its OIA season on Wednesday when it hosts Nanakuli. The Trojans played in two different tournaments in the preseason, going 12-3 over three days to finish second to No. 2 Kamehameha in the Hawaii Invitational, which also included No. 4 ‘Iolani. They […]

Kaahanui takes over at Aiea

By Jerry Campany on August 25, 2013

You see it at every level, from the NFL on down. A team’s quarterback goes down and its fortunes go down with him. The new guy is capable, but understandably just a little bit behind on the reads, and his throws don’t look the same to the receivers. Not at Aiea. Jordan Liilii went down with a broken foot early in the second game of the season, forcing veteran coach Wendell Say to turn to linebacker Mana Kaahanui to run […]

Kamehameha’s Sua-Godinet faces tough test

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 25, 2013

Saint Louis hasn’t been easy on new starting quarterbacks so far this season. The Crusaders shut out Baldwin, which is adjusting to life without Keelan Ewaliko taking snaps, in a 55-0 win on Maui to open the season. A week later, Kahuku sophomore Tuli Wily-Matangi completed two passes in eight attempts for 12 yards as the Red Raiders relied on their ground game to keep pace before Saint Louis pulled away to a 45-24 win. Following a bye, Saint Louis […]

Mililani’s Malepeai carries the load

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 24, 2013

After Mililani’s first preseason game, coach Rod York explained the Trojans’ shift in offensive emphasis as simply tailoring the scheme to their personnel. At times last year, the Trojans went without a running back in a five-wide set and York let quarterback Jarin Morikawa use his smarts and accuracy to move the Mililani offense through the air. This time around, York is calling for handoffs with far more frequency, and with confidence in the offensive line and a back like […]

Kahuku’s Liua good for a highlight or two

By Jerry Campany on August 24, 2013

Of all of the plays in third-ranked Kahuku’s offensive arsenal, the simplest might be the most effective. The two-time defending champions usually can be counted on to run the ball, and run it a lot. In Friday’s win over Kaimuki, they showed off a variety of option pitches to both sides, off-tackle plays and traps. Every one of them went to talented tailback Soli Afalava, who toted the ball 18 times for 120 yards, including second-half runs of 30 and […]

Saint Louis’ Yamamoto headed to Arizona

By Billy Hull on August 21, 2013

Saint Louis senior Jordan Yamamoto has given an oral commitment to play baseball at the University of Arizona, he said Wednesday night. Yamamoto called Arizona his “dream school from his freshman year” and earned a nice scholarship offer after topping out at 92-93 MPH at the Area Code tryouts for the Milwaukee Brewers at Westmont College in Montecito, Calif. Yamamoto immediately received interest from a host of colleges, including Oregon, Utah and Loyola Marymount. Once the Wildcats came calling and […]

Punahou football nationally ranked

By Jerry Campany on August 21, 2013

Punahou, which was judged the second best team in Hawaii in the most recent Star-Advertiser poll, is the only Hawaii school ranked in Scout.com Fox Sports preseason top 50. No. 1 Saint Louis did not draw a ranking. The Crusaders were ranked No. 3 in the same poll way back in 1999. The Buffanblu are ranked 32nd on the list, but it doesn’t include their 24-14 win over Mililani last week. Punahou will get a chance to get even more […]
