Video: #5 Campbell vs. Hilo

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2013

For Big Island fans — Hilo Vikings in particular — this was David versus Goliath. A mid-sized high school on Waianuenue Ave. taking on the big boys from the OIA, a humongous school compared to Hilo High. And for nearly three quarters, the underdog Viks were ready to shock the world. They led 17-14 through most of the third quarter. From there, however, the Vikings’ dream ended in a decisive way. The voice you hear on the footage is Josh […]

Pupule’s weekend wrap

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2013

It wasn’t the busiest weekend as prep football matchups go, but we learned a lot in those four state-tournament games. Two teams that Bleed Maroon The Farrington Governors endured a week that nobody could’ve imagined. The Farrington Governors stepped up and dealt with the loss of Dayne Ortiz in a way that they’ll remember forever. They honored the senior cornerback in so many ways, and they learned that they are not alone. Other teams came to support the Govs, through […]

Liana’s only touchdown pass was 12 yards to Jacob Baguio, who had eight receptions for 115 yards. The Governors honored […]

LIVE BLOG: Campbell 42, Hilo 27, final

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2013

KEAAU — It’s less than two hours until kickoff for the Hilo Vikings and Campbell Sabers. It’s a classic us-versus-them scenario for the BIIF champion Vikings, who have been unranked all season long. They’re on a nine-game win streak, though it would be hard to find anyone outside the Big Island who knows this. They are, as Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said, a classic running team with a strong front seven defensively. How good will Hilo be tonight? My guess […]

Carvalho recovering from head injury

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2013

He left the field in an ambulance, moments after Kahuku and Campbell fans saw him crumble to the ground after taking a powerful hit. Kahuku junior wide receiver Kuuliko Carvalho is recovering from a concussion, has four broken teeth and some nerve damage, coach Reggie Torres confirmed on Sunday. Reaching down to catch a pass on a crossing route, Carvalho was hit at point-blank range by Campbell’s Jerney Tago-Sue (pictured above) during the OIA’s third-place game at Mililani’s John Kauinana […]
