LIVE BLOG: Mililani 41, Campbell 7, Final

Either Campbell or Mililani will play in its first-ever state tournament final in Division I. No. 2 Mililani roared back from a 21-7 halftime deficit in the regular season to win 42-21. Will the heavily favored Trojans extend their winning streak against OIA teams or can quarterback Isaac Hurd lead the Sabers to the upset? Live in-game updates are below:

4:32 p.m.: Mililani RB Vavae Malepeai enters the game with 1,266 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. It’s the most yards in a season by a sophomore in the state championship era and more than all-time leaders Joe Igber, Aofaga Wily, Mark Atuaia, Kama Bailey and Mosi Tataupu had in their sophomore seasons. He needs 210 more yards this season to match the record pace of Igber, who is the state’s all-time leader with 4,428 yards.

4:35 p.m.: Mililani will receive the opening kickoff.

4:41 p.m.: Trojans go three-and-out as quarterback McKenzie Milton is a little shaky to start, overthrowing two passes to force a punt.

4:43 p.m.: A good punt pins Campbell deep but Hurd gets out of it with a perfectly thrown ball out of his own end zone to Amosa Amosa Jr. for 23 yards. Hurd gets another first down on a 10-yard bullet pass to Jayce Bantolina. A penalty forces third-and-13 and Hurd is sacked by guess who—Kelii Padello, who somehow was unblocked off the edge.

4:46 p.m.: Campbell punt hits a Mililani player but Trojans recover on their own 45.

4:48 p.m.: Malepeai held to a yard on his first carry but Milton scrambles for 12 yards. Milton’s next pass is again badly overthrown, missing a wide open receiver. After a Trojans penalty, Milton is sacked by Isaiah Gibson for a loss of 14 yards. Milton’s next pass is tipped and his next pass to Malepeai is good for 17 yards but it’s fourth-and-12. Trojans go for it and Milton scrambles for 14 yards and a first down.

4:53 p.m.: Dayton Furuta getting a couple of carries for the Trojans, who pound the ball inside the Campbell 15. A 12-yard touchdown pass from Milton to Kalakaua Timoteo gives Mililani a 7-0 lead with 5:38 in the first quarter.

4:59 p.m.: Third-and-9 from the 36 and Hurd with a beautiful touch throw over the middle to Galuega Castro for 21 yards. Campbell can’t get anything going in the run game and Hurd has to scramble on third and long. Sabers punt.

5:03 p.m.: Trojans take over on their own 16 and Malepeai runs for 11. Tack on a 15-yard face mask penalty and the Trojans are in business. Third-and-6 on the 45 and Malepeai runs for 17 yards. Quarter ends with Mililani second-and-goal from the 5.

5:13 p.m.: Malepeai takes the handoff on third-and-2 and is hit by Gibson, who forces a fumble. Campbell recovers and dodges a huge bullet. Sabers first-and-10 from their own 2.

5:16 p.m.: DL Blake Kondo records Mililani’s second sack of the night and Hurd is incomplete going deep for Bantolina on third down to force a punt.

5:21 p.m.: 24-yard touchdown pass from Milton to Bronsen Ader makes it 14-0 Trojans with 8:07 left in Q2.

5:27 p.m.: Penalties are killing Campbell. A holding call backs the Sabers up to their own 10. Another three-and-out gives Mililani the ball on the Campbell 44. Three-and-outs killed Campbell in the second half during the regular season meeting and it’s happening again. Sabers have to be able to move the ball.

5:30 p.m.: A 23-yard pass from Milton to Kainoa Wilson sets up a 3-yard touchdown run by Dayton Furuta. Mililani in command, up 21-0 with 6:55 left in first half.

Average starting field position: Campbell on its own 14, Mililani on its own 42.

5:35 p.m.: Mililani gets its third sack of Hurd, courtesy of DT Rex Manu. Another penalty on Campbell and Padello gets his second sack (Mililani’s fourth) to force a punt. That’s 18 sacks this year for Padello. I think I’ve seen about 15 of them.

5:39 p.m.: Wilson with a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown but a flag is thrown. Junior DL Josiah Mageo is injured on the play and stays down. I don’t want to get into the whole safety issue doing play by play but this is the third game in a row someone has gotten hurt and stayed down for an extended period of time. After about 13 minutes, Mageo is placed on a stretcher, placed on the cart and driven off.

5:52 p.m.: Flag on the punt return was a personal foul on Mililani so the touchdown stands. Penalty will be enforced on the kickoff. Mililani 28, Campbell 0, 4:28, Q2.

5:57 p.m.: Keola Himan with a 90-yard return before tripping at the Mililani 1 but it’s called back because of a hold. Penalties have KILLED Campbell tonight. Sabers will start first-and-10 at their 37.

5:59 p.m.: Padello gets his third sack of Hurd, fifth of the game by Mililani. He has 14 sacks now in the five games I’ve covered and I’ve been told that’s now 19 for the season.

6:02 p.m.: Campbell forces a much-needed three-and-out after a dropped pass by Mililani. Sabers can’t do anything as Manu gets his second sack. Trojans with six first-half sacks. Unbelievable.

6:07 p.m.: Mililani gets the ball back on its own 43 with 1:07 left. Will the Trojans even try anything here? They run it with Malepeai, who fumbles. Solomon Matautia on the recovery for Campbell. Sabers throw an incomplete pass then call an inside handoff? Sabers let clock run and Kaimana Padello ends the half with Mililani’s SEVENTH sack of Hurd. Halftime with the Trojans ahead, 28-0.

6:27 p.m.: Campbell receives the second-half kickoff and returns it to the 26. Hurd with a big 34-yard completion to Bantolina. Hurd scrambles 21 yards to the 14 but Campbell is called for both a personal foul and a hold. The holding call is accepted moving the ball all the way back to the Campbell 42. Now a delay of game on Campbell. Third-and-35 on the 37 and Hurd scrambles for 3 yards. Campbell punts.

6:37 p.m.: Sabers get the ball back as Abiel Taito intercepts a Milton pass and returns it 30 yards to the Mililani 40. Hurd is sacked for the eight time, second of the game by Kondo. And now Kaimana Padello with the sack on the third. For those keeping track that’s three sacks for Kelii Padello and two each for Kaimana Padello, Kondo and Manu. Campbell punts.

6:45 p.m.: Milton with a couple of big completions on third-and-long plays to pick up first downs. Haven’t seen as much of Malepeai as you might expect leading 28-0. Furuta with a 13-yard run on third-and-2 gets another conversion. Trojans on the Campbell 18. Campbell called for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Milton and it’s first-and-goal Trojans on the 4 as Campbell calls timeout.

6:51 p.m.: Furuta is in on third-and-goal from the 1 and we have a much-needed running clock with 1:28 as the Trojans lead 35-0. Drive was 18 plays, 97 yards, 4:20. 5-for-5 on third down.

6:56 p.m.: Sheldon Aki Jr. gets in on the sack parade, 10th of the game for Mililani, to end the third quarter.

6:58 p.m.: Kaimana Wilson recovers a Campbell fumble to start the fourth quarter and Malepeai scores his 20th rushing touchdown of the season, 16 yards, to make it 41-0, 10:26, Q4.

The largest margin of victory in this series coming in was a 48-12 win by Mililani on Sept. 10, 2010. Campbell has now gone seven full quarters without scoring a touchdown at Aloha Stadium this year.

Campbell led Mililani, 21-7, at halftime during the regular season. Since then, the Trojans have outscored the Sabers 76-0.

7:03 p.m.: Manu with his third sack, 11 total now for Mililani. A 38-yard pass from Hurd to Bantolina is wiped out due to a holding penalty. Just more of the same all night. Campbell penalties and Mililani sacks.

7:09 p.m.: Hurd ends the Aloha Stadium scoreless streak with a 31-yard touchdown run against Mililani’s second-string defense after a Trojans fumble. No more running clock but only 3:32 remaining.

7:21 p.m.: And that’s the ballgame. Mililani advances to its first-ever Division I state final against the Punahou/Farrington winner, which is up next.
